In France 'Philosophy' is the first paper one sits for the annual Baccalaureate exams (A Levels). Philosophers are taken very seriously, both present and past.
When teaching, my philosophy always was that 'education' should provoke questions, not provide answers. I stressed this to my pupils of all ages, and I think they understood and appreciated it.
Philosophy departments and courses offered in applied philosophy in English universities are on the decline so I was told by my Philosophy teacher two years ago.
