Our potato crop was excellent this year. I grew a variety called 'Charlotte', and they were literally forcing themselves out of the ground as they were both prolific and huge! I think I have a stock of about 50 Kilos.
Onions always do well. I think these were called 'Baron'. Again I have about 50 Kilos in storage.
Both the potatoes and the onions need to be checked every so often. A bad one amongst the good can soon play havoc.
It'll soon be time for soup again.

Those are some beautiful potatoes! Can they compare to the Irish, though?!! I boiled some small yellow spuds last night for dinner, and I declare that I want to swear off American potatoes forever.
ReplyDeleteThe humble potato can be a wonderful thing! The Irish are real connoisseurs. The ones above are OK, but not the best I've eaten.
ReplyDeletePotato and Leek soup - one of my all time favourites!
ReplyDeleteThose taters look superb!
Are these like catalog food where everything looks big and perfect in the picture, but in reality are the size of gumballs?
ReplyDeleteNo, being serious, I'm very impressed! You're like a settler from the Old West, harvesting your crop before the long winter comes across the prairie. Do you ever have problems with rats or mice?
Amy. You haven't met our Freddie! He would never allow such things.
ReplyDeleteJacqueline. That's my winter favourite too, but I'm afraid that the long hot summer has left our leeks looking rather slimline!
What a beautiful harvest. I'm so ready for woolly socks and soup weather.
ReplyDeleteDid I say something wrong, or am I imagining leaving a comment this morning?
ReplyDeleteHow are your Charlottes as boiling potatoes? I grew some this year and I'm finding they're disintegrating - strange, since they were described as 'waxy' in the catalogue.
ReplyDeleteI share your liking for etymological dictionaries and Flaubert, by the way!
You've got a good crop of both spuds and onions there Cro! We've tried Charlotte. They're nice. The red onions are good too - not so strong flavoured as some of the white ones.
ReplyDeleteTom.If you did leave a comment; it ain't there!
ReplyDeleteLinda. I do find that I have to watch them carefully, but they're great for mash. They don't roast too well... and I haven't yet tried baking. If possible next year I shall return to my beloved 'Agata'.
Oh, I must have pressed the wrong button. It was just admiring your spuds, and dreaming about the mushroom season. Carry on.
ReplyDeleteWe MAY be having deluge next week. We need at least 40mm for mushrooms. Fingers crossed!
