Kippers.

Image result for boil in the bag kippers

Yesterday I had a terrific sudden urge for 'boil-in-the-bag' Kippers.

When back in the UK, I used to buy these from Waitrose. Two or three Kipper fillets came in a vacuum pack, complete with a small pat of butter, and required immersing in boiling water for about 20 mins. God they were delicious, and I imagine still are!

I'm not sure why I thought about them yesterday. I have seen proper Kippers on sale here, but I've never bought them. Maybe it's about time I did.

Top of your list for the next visitor from 'home'?

My desire for them is still there today. I shall look for some substitute this morning at the fishmonger's.

Yes. I shall give instructions this morning!

My favourite breakfast, normally a "proper" kipper, but the boil-in-the bag ones are very good as well, and even quicker in the microwave.

i was denied kippers for many years as my first wife of 35 years couldn't stand the smell; but fortunately my current wife shares my liking for them, I have to remove the heads for her, she says she doesn't like the idea of hr breakfast looking at her!

I may buy a pukka Kipper today. The ones I've seen here look 'authentic', and should be good. However, the convenience of a boil-in-the-bag is very tempting.

I haven't had smoked kippers for years. I'm going to have to add them to my shopping list now.

When you get the urge for Kippers, nothing else will do.

And no smells. The joy of the boil in the bag ones.

They are good....
so, also, are the Bouffis.... which can be reheated if you want or eaten cold with honey-mustard.
The Bouffi is known as a Butley in Norfolk and Suffolk... or as a "Whole-smoked Herring" elsewhere.... you get the roe as well in these!
Now...
Fresh and fried soft herring roes on toast... that is something I miss... roes always come frozen nowadays... and they don't cook right!!

I used to enjoy kippers and then I suddenly didnt. I don't know why but after a while they made me feel queasy. I couldn't go back to them.

I used to love the boil in the bag ones, but when I had a craving for some a few years ago I didn't enjoy them at all.......much too salty for one thing!

As a child we ate home cooked kippers on a Saturday, watching the wrestling on TV, which we loved. It was the only meal we were allowed to eat away from the table. Just a kipper and a thick slice of bread.

I like Bouffis. I suppose they would be the equivalent to UK Bloaters. I must see if they have some next week. I'm just back from shopping and saw no preserved fish at all.

I have had that experience with other things; luckily not with Kippers.

No kippers for me - too many little bones but the soft roes on toast that Le Pre de la Forge mentioned would be great.

Cro Magnon said...

Taste changes. I like to think I'd still enjoy them.

I do remember eating Kippers as a child. I think they were gently boiled. Lovely.

Those little bones can be a nuisance, perhaps that's why I enjoy the bagged ones; no bones.

That's the only problem with fish!

Kippers are to Australians as Vegemite is to the English.

I can't stand Kippers, I cook them for my husband, but can't bear the flavour myself. However, I will go to a great deal of time and trouble to get myself some Arbroath Smokies, they're nectar of the Gods! Sitting on the edge of the dock in Arbroath, eating Smokies from a paper parcel, absolute bliss!

If you want them, you should definitely get them. We are getting too old to deny ourselves something. I hope they are all you remember them to be.

Cro Magnon said...

Surely, they can't be that bad!!!

Cro Magnon said...

I don't think I've ever eaten an Arbroath Smokie, but if they're that much better than a Kipper, I suppose I should.

Cro Magnon said...

My attitude exactly, in fact I've just this minute ordered some to be brought over in August.

I love them too Cro and they are always available on our Friday market from the excellent fish trailer selling fish from Whitby.
Trouble is that as they are not boil in the bag the smell hangs about for weeks.

I've never seen much less eaten a kipper! I hope you get to have some soon, and enjoy them!

Given that I live on an island which smoke kippers I'm astonished at how infrequently I eat them. I must pop into the smokehouse tomorrow.

JayCee said...

Our island local kipper smokers send them mail order by post in vacuum packs.
We pop ours into the microwave for a minute or so which contains the aroma a little.

Cro Magnon said...

That's really why I used to buy the bagged ones; no lingering smell, and delicious.

Cro Magnon said...

I'm sure you'd like them. Smoked Herring with a buttery sauce, lovely.

Cro Magnon said...

That sounds a bit like me saying 'I must visit my local vineyard tomorrow'. Lucky you!

Which Island do you live on?

I haven't lived in the UK for decades, and we never had a microwave. I do now, so that sounds like a very good idea. If only I could buy the Kippers!

JayCee said...

We live on the Isle of Man. There are two kipper smokers here and both do mail order although, on checking their websites this morning I have discovered that they only deliver to UK addresses - sorry!
