It was thirty eight years ago. Hardly anybody had a home computer and there were no mobile phones or social media. We still did not appreciate how much environmental harm we were doing to our planet. There was no ISIS and the AIDS epidemic was only just taking off. Madmen had not flown passenger jets into The Twin Towers and of course there was no COVID pandemic. Refugees were not seeking asylum in inflatable boats. Many visitors to this blog will have lost loved ones in those thirty eight years and we were all younger in 1984. To suggest that they were not more innocent times is simply contrary and silly. Besides, my uncontroversial remark was addressed to Cro Magnon and not to you.

I remember my kids watching The Young Ones and loving it, so I watched this and it was sort of funny, but I don't think I'd ever watch more.
Maybe you'd have to be brought-up with both The Young Ones and University Challenge to really appreciate it.

Simon Day on the Fast Show did a similar character to Bamber Gascoigne - Gideon Soames. There are some vids on YouTube which are worth a look.
