Now, this is serious!

Every Thursday evening in our village, we hold a 'Marché de Producteurs'; let's call it a mass picnic. What happens is this; local producers bring their wares to a field by the church, we buy whatever takes our fancy, and we all sit down to eat. Simple.

Last night we started with snails (delicious), then we ate freshly grilled duck breasts (wonderful), pork chops (very good), and salad. I seem to remember other delights being passed around, but they were mostly for the children. I'm not too good at estimating numbers, but last night we were probably around 250/300. The sun shone, we sat in the shade, and everyone had a great time.

Whoever came up with this idea deserves a medal. These 'mass picnics' are now a big part of many local village summers.

  1. This looks like so much fun! That church is especially lovely, Cro. Just as I imagined a country French church to be.

  2. Willow, I was just about to add that the ancient presbytery is roughly the same size as the church. These old Catholic priests didn't go short! They also had plenty of room for a 'housekeeper' or two.

  3. I love Marché de Producteurs. I wish there were things like this in Oz. Not sure it would be the same though.

  4. Brits are getting more events like this in the summer, but they are usually all French inspired. We have a market every year here where French rip-off merchants turn up with cheap goods at high prices, but it's not the same!

  5. That looks wonderful! We have lots of snails like that at our house - but they do all the eating - usually my cherished cabbages and lettuce. Like Willow, I love the picture of that little church.
Your weather looks a lot better than ours - rain all day yesterday and gales during the night.

  6. I agree with everyone else, that's a lovely church! And such a beautiful backdrop for all of you to get together. Great idea!

  7. Mmm, makes me feel all nostalgic for France! Lovely to see people eating good simple fare outside in evening sunshine - just what summer should be all about. No such luck here - it's the first day of the school summer holidays and it's pouring down! The kids are watching Mary Poppins as the rain lashes down on some abandoned toys in the garden and my beautiful plants have their leaves and petals torn off in a howling gale. All very Peak District! Luckily I'm soon off to south west France myself - a bolt hole in the Landes, so not too far from you.
    A bientot!
(Ps: came here from Elizabeth at Welsh Hills)

  9. Hello HOTH. Have a great time in the Landes. Lovely long beaches and oysters. Thanks for your visit.

Linda, I'm sure you must have experienced something similar to the above in Puy l'Eveque, n'est pas?
