Pocket Warhol.

I spent about 6 years at various Art Colleges, received a 1st class Hons degree, was encouraged by Carel Weight to attend The Royal College of Art (which I declined), and have about 40 years painting experience. None of which, of course, means I'm any more than an average bog-standard painter.

Above is a painting by Canada's very own 'Pocket Warhol'; a white capped Capucin monkey. These 'pictures' sell for about £250 each, and he can't produce enough for an ever-eager market.

Sometimes I wonder if my life wouldn't have been so much easier had I been born a Monkey. Maybe, even now, I should buy a Monkey suit. Life eh!

  1. I think there is a schizophrenic in the states that makes thousands for a painting. Keeps him off the streets, eh?

  6. Never envy a monkey. Besides, your work is much better than that.

  7. I, too, studied art, and received a degree. I have been practicing photography for 30 years. I can't sell an 8x10 for any amount, much less what this monkey is getting (or his AGENT). The art market is a strange and mysterious thing...for a good fiction read on the topic, see Steve Martin's An Object of Beauty. Says it all.

    Damned monkey.

  10. Snake oil. But a great idea. Forget the university fees lottery, and the Euro-millions. I'm catching myself a monkey tomorrow.

  12. Sadly it's not just 'dumb animals' that produce paintings like this and call it art. Maybe the dumb animals are the people that buy it.

  14. I have been working with and giving Pockets paints and canvas for the past year to keep him occupied as he is a rescued monkey from the exotic pet trade created by (dumb) humans. Just as a child likes to play and paint with colours so does Pockets. Non-human primates are highly intelligent and they need constant stimulation in captive settings to keep them from becoming withdrawn and bored. The paintings that Pockets has done were used to raise funds for Storybook Farm Primate Sanctuary which is a registered charity within Canada to care for 24 more rescued primates who deserve a chance to be happy.
