PSB.

I was at Haddock's picking a few Curly Kale leaves for my supper, when I noticed the amazing colour on one or two of my PSB plants.

Most veg' gardeners would agree that the arrival of Purple Sprouting Broccoli in Spring is the highlight of the past year's plantings, and a gigantic smile for the year's crops to come.

Each of my Winter 'greens' plants will throw-out sproutings in Spring, but the very best are those of the PSB. Those pre-flowering tips of bright purple, along with their tender leaves, are one of the highlights of the year. Mine had been planted way back in May of 2018, and we wait almost 10 months before harvest.

Aren't those colours amazing.

  1. You say for YOUR supper so I presume that Lady Magnon has already left for the Gold Coast. How long is she away for?

    1. Yes, she's away for a while. Not sure how long exactly. Pampering grandsons, sailing, off to Thailand, etc.

  2. The colours of those leaves are amazing, especially the purple and the pink. Almost too good to pick.

    1. Beautiful, aren't they. And they taste equally good.

  3. Over here, 'tis the season for 'kalettes', which I assume are the sprouts from kale. They are similar in colour and my favourite vegetable when I can get them.

    6. I'm saving the worst of his comments in my 'spam' folder; hopefully he will be prosecuted at a later date. I just wish there was a failsafe way of stopping him writing here in the first place. I've already contacted blogger about him.

  4. I think Paul is going to try growing this next year. We haven't grown winter veg for quite some time. It looks good.

  5. PSB. For what, I wondered, were you about to berate the BBC. Ah. Purple spouting broccoli. A subject about which, until this post, I knew absolutely nothing.

    1. You can buy bunches of PSB in the shops, but they are nothing like homegrown. An essential crop for every veg' gardener.

    2. Graham, I never heard of them either. I thought he was going to talk about the Postoffice Savings Bank.

    1. I think the colours mostly disappear when cooked; shame.

  9. Nothing in the veggie line tastes anywhere near as good as freshly picked purple sproutings. No good buying them in the shop - they need to be plot to pot in around five minutes.

    1. Quite right. The shop-bought is a very poor relation; and usually far too 'leafy'.
