Talk of the Devil!

Lady Magnon was watching the beginning of  last week's 'The Great British Sewing Bee', when they announced that the project was to make Bell Bottom trousers.

I've always disliked Bell Bottoms, and even though they were at the height of fashion during my London days; I managed to resist in favour of (what later became) the 'New Romantic' style.

Anyway, I was just explaining to Lady Magnon that in around 1966, a friend of mine in Chelsea called Adrian, bought millions of pairs of white US Navy Bell Bottoms, died them pink, yellow, blue, green, etc, and made a fortune on the back of the unpleasant hippyish trend.

Then, blow me down, just as I was telling Lady M all about him, on comes Adrian's face on the TV, with the presenter saying exactly what I'd just been saying myself.

Adrian's face appears very briefly at around 10.25secs, only die-hards would wish to watch any more.

Spooky, or what!

  1. Geoblocked here. I didn't mind flares but not bell bottoms.

  2. tut tut 'unpleasant hippyish trend';) Though never a hippy they definitely added colour to the street, and all the males had lots of hair, everyone is going bald now!

  3. I eventually succumbed to bell bottoms...as I always do, just as they're going out of fashion. Like winkle pickers ...eventually got a pair of them too and was stuck with both till I chucked them out.

    1. I wasn't a fan of either. I think I was right too!

  4. I think you are a secret Sewing Bee fan. Paul loves it! My mother used to make me the most horrendous bell bottoms from highly patterned polyester.

    1. It's a fun programme. Very camp, very amateur, and filled with disaster; perfect viewing.

    1. It really was. It was as if the man on the TV was repeating my exact words, at exactly the same moment.

    2. I remember them well ...... I undid the seams and added a triangle of flowery fabric ...... the wider the better ...... it wasn’t a good look !!!!! ..... and, I remember laying in a bath of diluted bleach to lighten and shrink them ...... you couldn't get stonewashed jeans then could you ? I don’t normally watch The Great British Seeing Bee but I did catch that episode .... it brought back some embarrassing memories 🤣 XXXX

    3. My greatest memory of Adrian was going up to his shop (he was on the first floor) and finding Jean and Chrissy Shrimpton both in their bras and knickers. Better than Steak-n-Chips.

  6. I have a photo of Tom casually leaning against a wall outside of the 'Good Companions' in Dyke Road wearing flare, they were white, quite the John Travolta. lol

  7. A fashion too far for me (big bottom ). I love TGBSB especially if recorded and I can avoid all the silly bits and get to the winner.

    1. I watched most of last week's. Some of the results were dreadful; one was excellent. It's a fun programme, even if one isn't interested in 'sewing'.

    2. The woman judge may be a great needlewoman etc but her outfits never give me any confidence in her judgement.

    1. Don't tell anyone, but I do all my own small sewing jobs. I'm hopeless at it, but I do it anyway.

  9. I can't see the video. I did wear bell bottoms with platform boots but not for long. Not a good look in the winter with frozen wet fabric flapping around your legs. Thank goodness there are no pictures.

    1. Oh dear, not platform heels as well. I hope you kept them, they're selling very well in retro shops!

  10. They were fun when I was younger, but dangerous now in my dotage. If I caught my foot in the flare, I would tumble over and the result would not be good. The same goes for the very wide pant legs they put out last year. Fashion can be a killer.

  11. As soon as I found on Google what Bell Bottom is, a whole world of memories opened up before me, I had such and platform shoes of course too.

  12. I had bells. One pair, red, white and blue. I was stylin'! Wore them with cowboy boots, in order to drive my motorcycle. I had a Captain America helmet, too. Those were the days.

    1. Now, that Captain America helmet I thoroughly approve of. The rest; not so sure.

  13. That is an unusual coincidence. As for flares and bellbottoms I was far too conservative.

  14. Oh how I rocked those bell bottoms in 1969. I had a pair of STRIPED ones. Can't see the video but I believe everything you say anyway.

    1. Stripes or no stripes, they do nothing for me. Too much material flapping about.
