The only time I appreciated a watermelon was in Romania in 1973. It was v hot. I have never really enjoyed one since. England is just not hot enough to get that must have watermelon feeling.
Funny because the only place I drank Coke was on the same holiday, Romania, and I also have never touched it since. I didnt like it then and was sure it made me ill.
It is definitely hot enough in many parts of US to enjoy a juicy part of summer. I make a very nice watermelon salad that has always put a smile on my grandchildrens' faces.
Never seen the attraction of watermelon - no matter how hot it is. Like Sue, I find it tasteless mush. This reminds me, there is a Galia melon lurking in the back of the fridge veggie draw.
Watermelon played a regular part in my Virginia childhood summers. I seem to remember sprinkling salt on watermelon...maybe that is akin to your mixing it with feta.
I'm not a great watermelon fan, and don't think I've had any this century. I do miss the fun of spitting the seeds. My brothers and I would giggle, even though our parents disapproved of our daring.
It's definitely hot enough here for watermelon to go down a treat most of the year. The ones my grandfather grew when I was a child, Sugar Babies, will always be the best I ever ate.
Love, love love, watermelon when I buy one I have to have it as soon as I get back from the market. So lucky you grow them. I posted three days of rain, clouds and more clouds today on my blog if you want to pop over.

Optimistic Cro!
The difference between an optimist and a pessimist, is that the optimist enjoys himself whilst waiting for the inevitable! I AM that optimist!
This is a daily, optimistic, 'photos and comments' blog. I make no judgements (only occasionally), just notes. If you wish to comment in any way at all, please feel free. Everything and everyone (except the obdurate and dictatorial) is very welcome.
I was born just south of London, but for the past 50 years I've lived in S W France. I am a painter by profession, and writer by desire. Lady Magnon and I live between an ancient cottage in a tiny village in perfectly tranquil French countryside, and a bijou townhouse in Brighton UK. In France we have plenty of fruit trees, all situated amongst a view that takes the breath away, in the UK we have a handkerchief sized patio. We also have a Border Collie called Billy. I try to treat our planet with respect, and encourage others to do likewise (without preaching).
Contentment is a glass of red, a plate of charcuterie, and a slice of good country bread. Perfect!
Cheaper and healthier than an ice lolly!
ReplyDeleteGreetings Maria x
I agree. Much better.
DeleteWe had a super curry at friends, with other friends, last night and the slices of water melon went down very well.
ReplyDeleteThe perfect coolant.
DeleteYum! I love watermelon but there's always too much for one person. Mr B doesn't care for it.
ReplyDeleteI bought it when all the kids were here, there wasn't much left.
DeleteI started to love it only last year, strange.
ReplyDeleteI find it has just the right amount of flavour, some of the smaller ones I find a bit sickly.
DeleteA summer staple here as well.
ReplyDeleteSo it should be. I sent the stuff this morning!
DeleteThanks

ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever drank Coke was in Tangiers when I was about 23. It was so good; I've never drunk it since.
DeleteFunny because the only place I drank Coke was on the same holiday, Romania, and I also have never touched it since. I didnt like it then and was sure it made me ill.
DeleteDelicious. But I was just thinking the same as Rachel. It rarely seems quite hot enough in England to appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI think it has to be over 30 C to really benefit.
DeleteIt is definitely hot enough in many parts of US to enjoy a juicy part of summer. I make a very nice watermelon salad that has always put a smile on my grandchildrens' faces.
ReplyDeleteI also add small lumps to Tomato salads.
DeleteA delicious salad is watermelon, feta, lime juice, fresh basil and salt and pepper. Yum!
DeleteThat sounds delicious. Tomorrow perhaps.
DeleteWe wandered down to the harbour the other day and Louis insisted on watermelon rather than ice cream. x
ReplyDeleteGood for him. Only one ingredient, whereas ice cream.....
DeleteLike Rachel and Jules, I can only eat water melon when it's really hot. Otherwise it's just tasteless mush.
ReplyDeleteThe children like it!

I actually like the fact that it doesn't have too much flavour. I look on it as eating red flavoured solid water

Best wishes.
Nowadays they come seedless (mine wasn't). I'm sure I've heard of people frying watermelon.... I must check.
DeleteYou can also infuse them with vodka for a bit of a kick.
ReplyDeleteWe usually eat ours during the heat of the afternoon, so I'm not sure if that would be advised; but it certainly sounds very good.
DeleteIt's definitely hot enough here for watermelon to go down a treat most of the year. The ones my grandfather grew when I was a child, Sugar Babies, will always be the best I ever ate.
ReplyDeleteIt's a paradox; watermelon goes down best in hot dry places, but requires a lot of water to grow. Odd.

cheers, parsnip
This wasn't home grown Parsnip; I've never tried. I only ever buy them when the children are here; far too big otherwise.
