Confession.

I am known, occasionally, to criticise kids who spend all day killing virtual-enemies on their phones or iPads, but I have to admit; I'm also a 'gamer'.

Not blasting aliens, crashing cars, or shooting-up baddies for me, but I do play 'Patience' on my laptop.

'Patience', is a pleasant one-person card game that takes about two minutes to play, and only requires a reasonable amount of eye/hand/brain co-ordination. A game that confirms that one's brain is still working; albeit not too exactingly.

The online version I play has a scoring system that makes it slightly competitive, but scores are of little importance other than telling you how fast you've completed the task.

Recently I decided to play a game with actual cards, and found it far less compelling than the online version; even though my original introduction to the game was obviously with a physical pack of cards.

I don't play that often, but I enjoy it; and if I can achieve a score of over 5,000, even more so.

No Grand Theft Auto, Fortnite, or Super Mario for me; but Patience yes.

I recommend. I even got Boo Boo hooked; I wonder if he's still playing over in Mexico.

    1. I refuse to play against Lady M, because she always beats me (cheats).

  3. Used to be a freecell addict.....then I upgraded my ipad and it’s jigsaws all the way now. Don’t laugh - some are not as easy as you think!

    1. Freecell seems to be very similar, I shall have to give it a go.

    2. I have been hooked on Freecell for about 6/7 years. It has an element of skill involved, but if you try it only attempt it if most of the aces are near the bottom of the columns otherwise it is impossible !

  4. I've never had time for games since I lost Tetris on my phone about four phones ago. My partner plays some kind of Tetris game on his tablet.......constantly.

    1. I used to play Patience every evening before I turned off my laptop. It became a way of saying 'Goodnight'. Now I play any old time.

  5. I play freecell too. It's easier to win than patience. I hope it's giving my brain some exercise

    1. I'm sure it's good for the eye/hand/brain. Anything that makes them work a bit must be good for you.

  6. Over the years I have bought packs of playing cards, enough to fill a desk drawer. I have not played with them for ages (Crib with my late husband when he could manage the game) and am totally out of the way of them. I remember that playing any Patience on the comp. was easy as you dont have the fag of shuffles and dealing.

    1. There is certainly a convenience factor by playing on screen. You don't even have to hunt around for the cards.

  7. After 8 months mostly in lockdown I have resorted to online solitaire too. It feels like a little escape as it occupies at least part of my brain for a while when I can’t be bothered with the crossword or sudoku. I class it as a guiltless pleasure, better than biscuits.

    1. I won't hear anything against biscuits; I've got back from shopping with three multi packs of delights.

  8. P plays online Patience every day. He usually plays the Daily Challenges which vary in difficulty. He also has an online chess game that he enjoys. It keeps him quiet for a while anyway.

    1. Is the chess opponent 'virtual'? I might try that, although my standard of play is pretty poor.

    2. Yes, he plays against a computer generated opponent but he can select the level of difficulty.

  9. Like Cathy above I do the odd jigsaw puzzle on line. Leaving aside that I just love to bring order to chaos, they are watercooler moments, time out, an indulgence. And because they need concentration you sort of zone out other thoughts. Like twenty winks without needing to lie down.

Gosh, Patience. Totally forgotten about it. I am sure I played it in my early twenties. Will give it a go again (off line). My latest ambition to learn Poker. If only I had the face to conceal my hand!

    1. Patience is fun. It only lasts a short while, and gives an aim. Perfect.

  10. I play Flow Free on my phone, it's a joint the coloured dots, but a bit more involved, I get a couple of different games each day, and like you I have had my grandsons playing it as well.

  13. I used to play patience with cards for hours. Then it was space invaders. Then pac-man. Then patience on the computer and Freecell. Then pinball. Now it's Bouncing Balls on the Novel games site. Only one thing at a time for months and months. Never anything complicated like Fortnight. I'm just moving into a new game: Duo Lingo. At last, applying my addiction to something useful.

  14. I have no patience so I don't play Patience. I play Impatience instead - a driving game where you zap and evaporate annoying drivers - drivers who don't indicate, those who speed up when you are trying to overtake, tailgaters and senior gentlemen singing "Like a Bat Out of Hell" as they tootle along to their favourite French hypermarket.

    1. I used to have a friend who'd installed a VERY loud hailer under his bonnet. He would shout "Get out of my fu*king way" very loudly when annoyed. The fuzz soon put an end to his fun.

  15. I'm ashamed to say that I am hooked on a card game called 'Royal Parade' to be found on 'World of Solitaire.com'. Any spare moment will find me playing the darn game. I love and hate it at the same time. lol
