He seems to have a preference for the older woman. Amie is a beautiful, big, dark, German Shepherd. She looks like she'd have your hand off as soon as look at you, but in fact she's a sweetheart.
I'm not sure who's more in love than who, but I do know that Billy adores Amie. Maybe he sees her as a mother figure.
They play together quite regularly, tearing around the garden, and play fighting. In the past it's been the possession of a particular fallen Quince that has amused them the most, but now they've all gone and an old tennis ball has become the prize.
We have one other German Shepherd who visits, but she's getting old and prefers to sit in the shade and watch. His previous friend, Marley (another GS), now stays at home. I think he's been 'discouraged' from his wanderings.

My dog’s best friend was 8 years older. They adored each other to the point he would sit and refuse to leave the park if he hadn’t seen her that day.

Dog friendships are really special.
Shepherds are such pretty dogs. Mine is a rescued mutt. There's Beagle for sure in her, but I also believe based on the shape of her face that there might be some Shepherd.
Rick has a girlfriend, Tilly. She's a white West Highland Terrier with a diamond studded collar who squeezes through the hedge and sits outside the door until we let Rick out. He is quite smitten.
Amie is beautiful. She's big, and dark, and fast. If I ever have another dog, it could well be a GS.
It's good for them to have friends who live nearby.

I'm not too fussy about my dogs; as long as they are energetic, friendly, and have reasonably long legs.

I love that Billy has a friend. It’s good for dogs to have a friend to play and socialise with as it is for us. Does Amie just turn up on her own or do her owners bring her ? XXXX

Dogs, like people, needs friends to play. They love their two legged owners, but are in their glory with a dog pal.
These days she arrives with her Dutch owner, who (for the moment) lives in a Gypsy Caravan. Two very good additions to our tiny community.
I agree. This is just one reason I hate to see Dogs chained up. They need friends of their own four-legged type.

Dog friendships are interesting to watch. My neighbors have labs and I have a Bernese Mountain dog. They all play well together. One neighbor has a pool and encourages the dogs to swim. They installed extra filtering to deal with the dog hair and a lovely staircase for gentle entry.
I'm pleased that it's not the other way round. He stays at home, and his friends visit him.
We've never encouraged our dogs to use the pool, although Monty (our Lab') was crazy about water. Billy just runs around the outside every time we swim.
Our Roxy loves her play dates with the neighbors Golden Retriever Stella and comes home exhausted. It’s a good thing.
The energy they spend by tearing about is wonderful... another good reason to have a friend.
