A tale of two parcels.

I hardly know where to begin with this story; it is bizarre to say the least.

Firstly let me say that we've had more strange behaviour from the French postal services than I thought was possible. This is just another example amongst many I could offer, although officially this one is the fault of Parcel Force and their French equivalent.

Two days ago, at mid-day, a man arrived with a big 4.4 kilo parcel. He handed it over, and hurriedly left.

The parcel boasted two different delivery addresses; one for a man near Paris, and the other for my daughter-in-law, Kellogg. The parcel had two separate delivery address stickers for the man near Paris, but one had an address for Kellogg stuck over it. The man had chosen to deliver the parcel here.

Lady M had a look at what was inside, and it turned out to be some English hand-made leather seat covers for some classic car. Had the parcel been for Kellogg it would have contained some essential oils.

Luckily the Parisian man's phone number was on the address label, so I called him; and, yes, he had Kellogg's parcel. We laughed a bit, scratched our heads, and tried to find a logical answer to their mistake..... we couldn't.

Well the pantomime ended with me having to re-wrap it, take it down to The Post Office (yes, that one) and send it to where it should have been delivered in the first place. He will do much the same with ours. It cost me €13.75 (not too bad I suppose)

p.s. Just for fun, I will add this other strange story. My youngest son had sent a correctly addressed large parcel to his Mother-in-law in Sweden, and paid €60 for the pleasure. Two days later it was delivered back to him, HERE. When he returned to The Post Office (yes, that one again) to explain that they'd made an amusing mistake, he was made to pay for it all over again; another €60. They wouldn't budge! What a bloody con!

  1. I believe that the original "A Tale of Two Parcels" was written by Charles Dickens. One shouldn't be afraid of flaunting one's knowledge once in a while.

    1. This tale was 'the worst of times', there was no 'best'.

  2. We have had more problems with courier companies one in France who insisted they could not find our house and left the parcel at the local bar , strange as everyone else has no problem finding us . The star goes to a courier company in the uk that took six weeks to deliver a present to my son in law in runcorn , the company was in Manchester but kept insisting that they could not find runcorn .

    1. Mostly, the couriers phone us from the nearest 'town', and I just tell them to leave it at the tabac. It saves hours of giving directions.

  3. Why is it never a light cheap to post parcel which bounces back/ goes astray?

  4. Posta charges are expensive here too but on the whole my experience has been good. But costs to send a parcel abroad are steep - I bought a tablecloth to send as a thank you to friends in The Netherlands some years ago - the cloth cost thirty pounds and it ost me forty pounds to send it. Yesterday, after the postman had been I thought I had an e mail from Amazon to say my book had been elivered through my letter box and what did I think of the service. And sure enough when I went to the front door there it was - first class service.

    1. I've always found Amazon very good. It's the other lot like DHL and Parcel Force who couldn't dive a damn about 'service'.

  5. I have no experience of this for myself as I do not order goods. I do occasionally order books from Waterstones and dvds from BFI but they both use Royal Mail and that is why I use them. My postman knows where I am and if I am not here he knows where to put them.

    1. Finding a house out in the country, here, is not easy. Our 'village' is not a village in the English sense; it's an area of well spread-out farms over an area of many sq kms. It's usually easier to tell a delivery person to leave it at a shop in our nearest 'town'.

  6. Parcel delivery here is so prompt. Letter delivery, not so much. My London Tube Map mouse mat was posted by ordinary post two weeks ago and has not arrive. Ordered parcels arrive promptly, like three days. Yesterday after more than week of no letters, not unusual, I received two letters from my mother mother, one postmarked 1st September and one marked 9th September, the day after she posted it. Our mail is an essential public service. It has gone so wrong.

    1. Postal services always used to be so good. Now you use them at your peril, and they rarely take responsibility for their mistakes.

    1. Just be grateful he didn't go to North Korea! I doubt if anything would get through there; especially not Bisto.

    2. Hi Andy, we have had previous problems sending to Canada. Now we order from Amazon and have it delivered to a Canadian address. There seems to be no problem when it is in an Amazon box. Check for the postage though it could be slightly more.

    1. Another time we sent a parcel to Sweden, and it went to Ireland; where it stayed for about a month, before being forwarded to Sweden. No explanation was ever given.

  9. The postal service used to do a lot of Amazon deliveries and they became expensive. Amazon decided to do their own deliveries. This was a lost opportunity for the postal service. Amazon now out performs the postal service in cost and efficiency.
