Jack's.

Tesco, one of the leading UK supermarkets, has just opened the first of a new chain of discount stores called Jack's.

The idea, I believe, is to compete with Aldi and Lidl.

I am pleased to see that 80% of all products sold at Jack's will be 'British', and I have a feeling that this will prove extremely popular with their shoppers.

In a post-Brexit Britain we will need a lot more Jack's, and a lot less Aldi and Lidl.

Well done Tesco (OK, I'm a shareholder).

A very unfortunate name to use: because a phrase Going to the Jack's actually means going to the lavatory in some parts of the world!

I am sure Jack’s will do well. I buy local when I can and look at labels to see where the products that I buy are produced. I am not anti-globalization but I also think that charity (and jobs) begins at home. Unfortunately, it is hard to buy clothes that aren’t made overseas, and because I don’t want to walk around naked and cause people to wish they were blind, I have to give in when I need something new to wear.

I've heard the word 'Jacksie', meaning 'bog'. No doubt the same origin.

There are so many things we can't help buying from abroad; coffee, bananas, and cinnamon, for example. But if something can be either made or grown at home, then it should be!

Suspect it might be from Union Jack.

And hence Jack.

I hope they sell butterscotch and Wensleydale cheese as well as Jelly Tots and Liquorice Allsorts - all created in Yorkshire.

I believe they'll be selling crispy fried Whippets, and Yorkshire Puddings; as well as mushy P's.

You're right, of course.

I had to google 'Party Pies'; no thanks.

Well it's not something I'm going to need to worry about on Lewis.

Dont think Aldi and Lidl have anything to worry about, we have a Jack's fairly close by. Not worth all the hype.

I'm just slightly worried that the low prices they will be offering will be at the expense of decent livelihoods of the UK producers, cashing in on the Brexit crash. I still remember that TV programme about the producer of parsnips that Tesco put out of business because they pushed the price too low.
Good for the shareholders though......
