Fog

Yesterday morning the fog was so dense that the sound of the 8am church bells, from just 2 kms away, was muffled and dull-sounding.

Regardless, I prefer this type of weather to extreme cold, or wretched snow.

So far our winter has been reasonably kind. We've had just a couple of sub-zero nights, plenty of rain, and plenty of the above; cool misty mornings.

Snow drops are in flower, Daffs are coming up, and Daylilies are sprouting all over. In the orchard, the Peach and Cherry trees are already showing their fruiting buds.

I recently had to buy new gumboots, as my last pair were leaking badly; so, with ancient Barbour, waterproof wellies, 'Hunter' socks, thermal gloves, silly Russian style hat, and a sort of puffer waistcoat thingy (is that what they're called?), I'm now prepared for whatever nature can throw at the fan. It can even bloody snow if it likes; I shall remain warm and dry, even if I can't see much further than beyond the big Pear tree.

p.s. It may be of interest. Princess Anne's first husband, Cap't Mark Phillips, was given the name 'Fog' by Prince Charles. He was viewed as 'thick and wet'; the name stuck, and it was used by the whole royal family. They were pleased to be shot of him!

Ah churchbells ringing, reminds me of being a kid.

Ours are now 'automatic'. They ring the hour (twice), and the half hour. They start at 8am, and stop at 8pm (I think). If the wind is from East to West I hear them OK. If the wind is from West to East I hardly hear them at all. I don't wear a watch!

Sounds like Spring is just around the corner (whichmust mean that autumn is just around ours.

Mother Nature likes to fool us. False hopes; then BANG.

I was a child when I saw the film Midnight Lace with Doris Day. There was a scene that haunted me for a long time. It was a scene whete there was a shadow in the thick fog who was calling her name. Well Cro I wouldn't like to meet you dressed like that in the forest with thick fog :)
Greetings Maria x

You probably wouldn't like to meet me dressed as a Pantomime Horse either! I'm just about to go out dog-walking. I've looked outside; no fog today.

Today we celebrate here "To bishvat", the day that marks the begining of a new year for the trees.

I'm just back from my early morning walk, and I noticed that the birds have started singing. They must know about 'the bishvat'.

I am just back from my early food shopping, beautiful sunny day here,i wish it was enough for peace of mind and happiness, But there is always something else to worry about.

Our mornings are so damp you think it has rained but by 10 the sun is out. Beautiful days just at the moment 18o. Halcyon days. February can be darn cold though. But...yes, spring is on the way

Raining here now, started just after I got up. Don't think I will be outside drawing the trees today.

Cro Magnon said...

Poor you Yael; I think about you often.

I think it will stay cold and wet here for a while. I need to hibernate.

I have just been fiddling with my colours. I'm thinking of breaking away from B & W. Plenty of sketches done, so I just need to crack-on.

Thank you.

Beware the hound of the Baskervilles, he may be out there somewhere. I like the muffled sound of a bell or a ships horn in fog. There was a dimwit called Foggy Dewhurst in the tv series Last of the Summer Wine as I'm sure you know.

Fog is a rarity here on Lewis: probably because there's so much darn wind.

Cro Magnon said...

The baying of hounds is not uncommon here. Just two days ago a huge pack were following behind a male Red Deer. I didn't hear if he was shot; I hope not.

Having experienced total white-out sea mists on the south coast, our foggy mornings are quite mild affairs. At least we can see our own feet.

The fashionistas call your puffa waistcoat thingy a gilet !!!! I’m sure you wouldn’t look out of place in the posh Cotswolds ! Quite grey here but it might brighten up. I’m off to the pub to meet my bestest friend. XXXX

I like the Charles nickname.

Cro Magnon said...

Thank you J; gilet it is! I wish I could say I was just off to the pub', I have sawing to do.

I think it may have been 'Foggy' rather than 'Fog', but the spirit in which it was given remains the same.

I remember those cold, foggy days of French winters. Everything always seemed so still and quiet.

Funny about Mark Phillips. All those flowers popping up? Must be nearly spring.

Cro Magnon said...

I'm afraid they may linger; you're probably better off in Blighty.

Cro Magnon said...

Faux-spring I fear; this happens a lot, we're given false hopes then it turns very nasty again.

I appreciate the fog except if I am driving in it.

Cro Magnon said...

I can remember once driving in fog, and having to have the car door open so I could see the white line down the middle of the road. Luckily it was very quiet.

That is a gorgeous picture.

Fog has always made me feel melancholy but I have decided to embrace it and learn to enjoy, as we spend much of May and most of June underneath it.

It is nice to see spring flowers coming up. It's snowing to beat the band here although we had a beautiful blue blood moon last night. It was spectacular.

Today the sun dazzles!

It was very, very cold here this morning. No fog, which I would have liked.

-22 today with the windchill feeling like -34.

I'd love for it to be warm enough for fog

The whole of winter makes me melancholy. I spend my time thinking of summer!

Cro Magnon said...

We couldn't see the moon here; too cloudy. However, the night was very light.

Cro Magnon said...

I wish it would here. They keep promising; jam tomorrow.

Cro Magnon said...

It does make for wonderful atmosphere, but I'd prefer without.

Cro Magnon said...

I try to keep up, although Phillips is long gone.

Where do you live 50? In either C or F that sounds dreadful.
