3 Calves, 1 Cow.

I've often expressed my dislike of the common-or-garden Fresian and Holstein, black-n-white, milk machines. Regional varieties of cow are so much more interesting, and, of course, designed to cope with regional peculiarities.

Above is S W France's very own cow; the Blonde d'Aquitaine. A beautiful beast that would grace any pasture. Here she is looking after 3 calves; only one of which I presume is hers.

Bad photo, I'm afraid. I took it through the open window of the compact Royce. But look how much more beautiful she is than those wretched animals whose names I am now reluctant to mention.

  1. Cro, we could not agree more ! Over the last 15 years we have phased out our pure bred Holsteins who had no chance at all for long term survival and replaced with a variety of intersting semen crosses. Our dairy herd is happy healthy and has lots of colors but this gal on your post is gorgeous. Maybe I'm just saying that because she is built like me.

  3. They look lovely. Very clean too, not up their knees in mud and poo. Suppose it's the climate?

    Gentlemen prefer blondes (apparently).

  4. I've always loved Jerseys (with sprayed-on eye make-up like caramel custards) but I have been told they are the most aggressive, unpredictable and dangerous of the breeds. A bit like their beautiful blonde human counterparts...

  6. She's just lovely Cro. I agree about the Holsteins....rangy old girls with their hips protruding...but in general they were easy to handle.

  7. I think all cows have beautiful eyes and I'm sure some a more cantankerous than others, bit like us humans I suppose, but whenever I see a road train loaded with them heading for the abattoir I cant help but feel sad :o( not much of a country girl hey ? ha ha

  8. So, I guess you are saying is that "blond is beautiful."

I am surrounded by cows, literally. They get loose from the farm across the way and like to tramp around my yard. Like Chris F, I find them to be beautiful creatures and hate to think of their fate. This is one of the reasons I eat mostly vegetarian. The soy beef doesn't have big, sad eyes.

  11. Okay, I admit most of the cows around here are the black and white Holstein kind. I've never tipped one over though. My hands are clean.

  13. Love the Blonde d'Aquitaines. Keep publishing cow pictures and I'll be hooked for life - I'm a farmer from days of yore.
