My late Swedish Mother in Law was very keen on knitting socks.
These socks were usually handed-out at Christmas, as presents.
The socks were fine, but for some reason they always wore out at the heel extremely quickly.
After a few years of faulty sock making, she decided to quit.
She then began to make miniature socks, far too small to be worn, so far more durable. We were all offered a pair.
I think my oldest, Kimbo, used his to replace the furry dice hanging from his car's rear-view mirror.
My daughter, out in Oz, uses hers as Christmas Tree decorations (above).
Ours, I think, are in a box of 'miscellaneous prized items' in a UK loft.
The miniature socks have had a much more varied, and longer, life than the full sized ones ever had!
Thank you Mor Mor. x
(p.s. She once made a sock with two heels. Unfortunately she un-knitted it before we had a chance to grab it as a wonderful souvenir)
Sounds familiar. All the filter have tiny Xmas socks hanging on their trees. I got carried away a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteNo where else to give them so I stopped or I'd have a box of them somewhere too.
And I'd thought that my mother in law was unique!
DeleteCute, almost dog paw size.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he'd tolerate them.
DeleteA two-heeled sock sounds almost like a bra! I've just come home from a wool shop (yes, Sale Time, no, I'm no knitter but I have some Plans for 2019) and they had tiny socks like your Mor Mor's hanging as their tree's decorations, too! Must be a crafty thing happening in Australia. I was very taken with them.
ReplyDeleteGoodness.... sounds like everyone's doing them!
DeleteIt was so chilly in bed last two nights I had to put some socks on! And I have a Santa Claus hat for when it gets bitter cold.
ReplyDeleteAbout 10 nights ago I actually filled a hot water bottle; it was very comforting. I believe it's going to be very cold again next week, so I might do it again.
DeleteThey're alright until they spring a leak in the night. My last one perished around the neck and I didn't notice. In the night - disaster, but thankfully not of biblical proportions.
DeleteLive dangerously!
DeleteOne walnut at a time.
ReplyDeleteWhen the seagull follows the trawler....
DeleteHaving just been putting tiny socks on a one year old I think I'll stick to cotton ones. The only time I wear woollen socks is in my hiking boots and I rarely wear them now because modern walking shoes are so much lighter.
ReplyDeleteI shall probably wearing hefty socks in my gumboots before too long.... cold weather on the way, and my feet suffer.
DeleteI wear hefty socks in my wellington boots (I've never called them gumboots for some reason) but they are cotton from Hoggs many years ago.
DeleteTo me they're either Wellies, or Gumboots. Chacun son mot.
DeleteHand made gifts are so much lovelier x
ReplyDeleteThese particular ones make us laugh too. What could be better?
DeleteHaving just read the above comments I shall change my hot water bottle tonight for a new one. I take it to bed everynight and have had it for three years - so the time has come.
ReplyDeleteI think the one I used must have been brand new; I'd not seen it before. It was white, with a furry red cover. V Exotic.
DeleteWonderful tree and I love the wee socks !
ReplyDeletecheers, parsnip
Great family souvenirs!
