Croatia Eurovision 2023

Those who live outside the Eurovision zone may not have heard of our strange annual Song Contest. A maximum of 44 countries take part each year, with around 55 countries having taken part at least once.

The Eurovision Song Contest is possibly the world's most bizarre showcase for all that is bad, ridiculous, and unworthy in contemporary music.

I wasn't going to mention this year's farce (held last weekend), as it looked to be the worst ever. I lasted for just 4 songs (performances), by which time I'd had enough, and went to bed! It was abysmal.

The competition is more about costumes, flashing lights, and outrageous choreography, that actual music. Music is the one thing the competitors seem to forget; or ignore.

The above is a good example (it also happens to have been my most/least favourite of 2023). It is a perfect example of the standard of singing/songs.

The UK's dreadful entry finished next to last, as expected.

Sweden won, so Lady M (who watched more of it than I did) was happy.

  1. Thank goodness I didn't watch it this year, or last year, or the year before. We used to watch the scores at the end but even that doesn't interest anymore.
    That was woefully weird.

    1. I only watched the first four 'songs', they were DIRE. It used to full of airy bouncy pop songs, but these days it's simply weird.

  2. It used to be about the music and the songs and finding new talent, now it's more a compettiton to see who has the most outrageous costumes.

    1. Absolutely; and forget the song and tune, they are now totally unimportant.

  3. Looks like the sort of thing you’d see performed by a load of uni students at the end of year review

  4. Don't think of it as anything to do with music just as a way of millions having fun watching it from all around the world - even if you don't!

    1. I think that's the only way one can see it.

  5. There is always a lot of excitement here. The illusion that for some time we also belong to Europe. A very good feeling for those who most of the time live as if on a desert island. I haven't watched it in a few years.

    1. The build-up to the show was HUGE here, everyone (not me) was very excited. As soon as it was over everyone realised what a disappointment it was, with no decent songs at all.

  6. STOCKHOLM 2024... "And now representing The United Kingdom, dressed in flashing sequined body suits singing "Ooom Pah Pah Ey Up Love!" it's Crozier and Lady Olga!"

    1. I was young enough last year, but not now. My tonsils are past it!

  7. The last time I watched was, I think, the year Abba won - and look what happened to them! I doubt it's the same without Terry Wogan and the look of embarrassment on his face as he announced that the UK had scored "null points".

    1. Ever since the Wogan days, it's gone downhill. At least he made the whole show amusing.

  8. The only time I watched was the year of 'Puppet on a string' and that wasn't yesterday. Think it was about early 70's.

    1. I always say I'm going to watch it, but never do. After the first couple of 'songs' I lose interest.

    1. If you enjoyed the video, I would recommend you to watch it. If you didn't, you aren't missing anything.

  11. It is kind of sad to have something widely promoted yet lack talent. I have to wonder who the target audience is.

    1. This year it seems to have been targeted towards the Gay and Transgender community. I hope they enjoyed it.

    2. The Eurovisian has been a gay night for several years now. You may have seen more of it this year in the build up in England that you mentioned to someone because this year England hosted it and the BBC made a big thing of televising it. Nothing has really changed this year except that we hosted it. It is best avoided if you do not like it. I haven't watched it for years. Easy peasy, just turn it off. There are so many other channels and streaming services to watch one really doesn't have to bother with the BBC anymore.

    3. I really would like to like it, but yet again it was tedious, so I reverted to radio 4 extra instead.

  12. Cro - off-topic but I have no other contact details; this recently appeared relating to the recent Brighton local council elections - https://www.spiked-online.com/2023/05/16/brighton-caught-between-red-and-green/

    1. Thanks for that; he has it absolutely right! We are all now waiting for our rates to rise as they set about spending our money on all those unnecessary woke/liberal/lefty policies that simply cause chaos. Most people here try to ignore the Town Hall and simply get on with lives in our fabulous city, as if they're not there.

I don't think the votes were anti-Sunak. Local politics and National politics are very different things. A sitting government always expects to lose seats in local elections.
