Round and About Yesterday Morning.

I had to pop into town for some special screws yesterday morning. En route I saw the following.

I'm not over-keen on this type of 'trashy graffiti', but I will make yet another exception for this one. If it was no more that 6ft square, I'd happily have it on my wall.

I imagine it's the result of years of overlaid scribblings.

This fence and gate caught my eye. Someone must have a pencil fetish.

And lastly, I couldn't resist this wonderful Pork Pie. It's home-made, hand-made, and desirable enough to make a grown man cry. It comes from a small artisanal shop down in The North Laine area of Brighton (The Brighton Sausage Co), which also sells a wonderful variety of sausages. A thing of beauty is a joy until after lunch!

Just look at that, they don't make better in Melton Mowbray itself. Need I tell you; it was superb.

  1. Only an artist could see the beauty in that graffiti. I do however truly appreciate the beauty of that pie.
I bet your palate did a dance of joy.

  3. That's a wonderfully quirky pencil gate and fence. Someone has a sense of humour.
Did you eat all that pie in one sitting?

    1. Only a quarter of it so far, I suspect we'll do better today. I don't see it greeting Monday.

  4. After years of reading your blog I must find a way to get pork pie. I'm not sure there are any here but I'll find out.

    1. I'm a big fan of Pork Pies. They're very 'British', I'm not sure you'd get them anywhere else. However, they're very easy to make; mostly.

  5. Older men popping into town for screws... It's not the first time I have heard about this. Nonetheless, you picked up a real beauty... the pork pie I mean.

    1. I think it's the most beautiful Pork Pie I've ever seen; a perfect pie. Dickensian almost, I could imagine myself sharing it with Joe Gargery.

    2. Who did you hear from? Let us hope it wasn't the son-in-law. Grow up. Everything has to be about sex with you.

  6. If there's a shortage of blue pencil in the world, now we know why! That pastry looks delicious, too.

    1. They've cornered the market in blue pencils; expect a sharp price rise!

  7. Are you telling me that its loveliness does not increase after you have eaten it? I do hope not.

    1. Its loveliness was at its best whilst I was eating it.

  8. I love the graffiti …. I would like it even more if the black outline drawing wasn’t on it …. I feel that was a bit of graffiti too far and spoilt it !
I want a slice of pork pie now ! XXXX

    1. It would be fun on a big white wall in a minimalist home. I could look at it for hours.

  9. I like good food but I also love great presentation. Did they use some kind of mold to shape the pork pie? Jackie (above) is right and I second her thoughts.

    1. Traditionally the pastry is moulded around a wooden 'dolly', then filled with the pork mix, before the top is added. I have no idea if this was made that way, it does look amazingly neat.

  10. The pencil fence reminded me of my own fence creation in my back yard. We had to take down a couple of small, dying trees in the back yard last year. Instead of chopping them up for compost, I wove the branches and stems together to form an "artsy" fence in front of one of my gardens. I was quite pleased with the end result. The next day, my friend and neighbour asked me if I wanted to borrow his trailer to dispose of my "brush pile". Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

    1. Sounds fun. I've always wanted to weave a Willow hedge, but have yet to do so. I will one day!

  11. I like a good pork pie. I am quite fussy about them. That one has a good crust but the inside is what counts.

    1. There was a nice amount of jelly inside; that's the tricky bit. A good pork pie.

    2. Yes, I was going to mention the jelly. I am glad that was a good pie.

    3. I did try to make a pork pie once, but I failed to get the jelly inside. It all flooded out at the bottom.

  14. I don't like the graffiti. I don't like pork either, so probably wouldn't like a pork pie, but that one is well made and nice to look at.

  15. All those blue pencils took me back towhen I was working at a county newspaper back in the 70s. A blue pencil is a pencil traditionally used by a copy editor or sub-editor to show corrections to a written copy. The color was used because it wouldn't show in some lithographic or photographic reproduction processes. Thanks for posting. I thought I got a good whiff of printer's ink just looking at them. LOL
