Worth a look.

From July 20th to October 27th, the RA is showing over 60 painting (mostly portraits) by the little known Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck.

The exhibition will be based in the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries, on the first floor.

Ms Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) has a very light tough, and much of her thin 'scumbling' technique reminds me of Ron Kitaj.

Very much a feminine painter, she works with a beautiful sensitivity of touch.

If you're in Piccadilly whilst she's showing, it would be well worth a detour.

I saw a beautiful exhibition in Hamburg, around 2007. Love her portraits!

How do you feel about company on that visit Rachel?

They really are 'beautiful' paintings; worked with both talent and intelligence.

I saw this publicised, and it looks right up my street, but I can't see me getting to it. Perhaps someone who does can tell us if the exhibition book is worth sending for?

I won't make it either. I should think the book/catalogue would be excellent.

Yes, Libby, that would be good. I will email you nearer the time. Thank you.

I'm planning to make regular trips to Piccadilly as I've just discovered Carpo the chocolate shop. I may just pop in to the exhibition while I'm there.

A good exhibition, with a few chocs en route; sounds OK to me.

For some family reasons everything about Finnish art and culture is very interesting to me, I'll look for it later.

We have several 'Scandinavians' in the family (my wife is Swedish), and I too find them very interesting. They are a quietly cultured tribe, who keep very much to themselves.

That looks to be fascinating work..will the exhibition be travelling to anywhere else in the UK?

I don't know. It doesn't give any other venues in the RA blurb.

I love her portraits.

So do I. Very simple and expressive.

Never get to London now, sadly. I have recently watched a programme (several times) on Paula Rego and her work. I love it. Is she to your taste -- would be interested to know.

Paula Rego is probably my favourite living female painter. She must be in her 80's now (or even 90's).

She is 84 years old. I saw the programme...fascinating woman

A pity. A few exhibitions do get to Cardiff and Glasgow or Edinburgh..
