Coping with the Heat.

The near 40 C heatwave is forecast to last for another week or more.

I feared for my recently planted Swiss Chard and Cavolo Nero seedlings; they were having difficulty coping.

My answer is a couple of large, shade giving, parasols. I am keeping my fingers crossed that with these, plus regular watering, they will survive.

As for us, you'll find us in the pool.

Billy has his own pool. Phew, wot a scorcher!

  1. So pleased that Izzy has turned up safe and sound. 15 or 16 degrees forecast here for the next week. Quite pleasant for winter. Hope you can keep cool.

    1. Yes, it's a great relief about Izzy. We have known her for years; she used to visit us regularly

  2. We bought Rick his own little paddling pool when we were in France but he absolutely refused to go near it. He likes paddling in the river though. Good news about Izzy.

    1. Billy has a strange relationship with the pool, but loves his own mini version.

  3. Love your parasol solution. My garden is protected from the worst sun by the shade of the grape vine. I notice others around here have put up green shade netting. Strong sun destroys everything!
Your Billy looks a cool and happy chap

    1. At the end of the day everything is wilted and drooping. It recovers over night, but looks horrible. The parasols are doing what was expected of them.

    1. Too hot here; I couldn't sleep last night. I think my Chard will survive.

  6. We only managed 30C here yesterday afternoon and that was more than enough for us. Keep cool and carry on 😎

  7. Ah, summer! Love the paddling pool and it looks like it'll be hours of fun for Billy.

While I would probably faint from the shock of seeing several feet of snow in winter and would be ill-equipped to deal with a blizzard, we are built of hardier stuff in these parts when it comes to summer. 40 degrees is more deserving of the label heatwave. At 30 degrees, it's officially t-shirt weather! Mind you, it may explain why veggie patches typically look a bit more scorched earth than the verdant Haddocks.

    1. At the end of each day, poor Haddock's looks very limp and tired; a bit like me. Somehow it seems to recuperate overnight.

    1. I'm afraid that Lady Magnon has been trying to tempt him; luckily he says 'no'.
