The Very Best Sign Of Spring.

The sky was as blue as it's possible to be, and the mid-day temperature was just above 20C. Then voila, just as we settled down to eat our lunch outdoors, there they were; right on cue.

For me the most evocative sign of oncoming Spring is the return of the Cranes. We waved them goodbye in Autumn, and we welcome them home again in Spring.

I apologise for my rotten video, but they really are very high up. It's possibly better to watch on YouTube.

It's surprisingly emotional.

That wonderful thing that we call nature.

Must be a sign for us to load the car and head south. (The dining room has already been taken over by chitting potatoes...)

Casually he says the temperature was 20C - what, already! The cranes must be a fabulous sight - I have only seen them in captivity.

They set off on the Full Moon probably.

Well it was a nice blue sky anyway.

Maybe you could HEAR them, if not SEE them?

A wonderful sight. I understand the emotion.

I can only just see them but can hear them and I agree it would be the most marvellous and uplifting sight. I read in the Times today that the sandmartins are coming back - maybe the first signs here too - and our yellowhammers are at the bird table again. Spring pushes on whether the weather says it can or not.
