Stephen Fry on God.
This clip has been doing the rounds. Good to see Stephen Fry repeating something that most of us have been saying for years. Thank you Mr Fry; it takes someone like you to be heard.
In many countries Stephen would be thrown into jail for saying this in public, maybe even executed. Hurrah for freedom of speech and the secular society!
I have always found Mr Fry to be something of a pompous ass, I am personally thankful that his views are in the minority. The interviewers face was funny though.
We've just come back from visiting him. Last night they said he was in a very bad way; this morning he's a little better. We just don't know what to think, but we live in hope!
Oddly the first name of the "little Irish guy" is Gay whose last name is Byrne pronounced as burn - just think about that for a moment because during the Catholic inquisition gay men were burnt at the stake.
AND WE ESPECIALLY LOVE THE LINE ABOUT INSECTS AND CHILDREN GOING BLIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I haven't seen this before.....this whole God/the universe/religion thing is a perplexing and puzzling thing to me...I only know what I know.....there are good people and bad people and far too many mysteries in life....
Stephen Fry himself says he apparently gives off the air of being a 'pompous ass'. His friends say he is the kindest, most generous person they know. I see him as an intelligent and talented gentleman. The Oscar Wilde of our generation. In this video clip he voices the opinion of many, including myself. He does it beautifully.
I wonder of I could persuade Marcia to sit down and watch this?
The real criminals are not those who reason on the nature of God or his existence, but those who, relying on superstition, profess to 'speak His word'...
'While they pretended to have nothing in view but the salvation of souls, had bent all their attention to the acquisition of riches, and were restrained by no sense of justice or of honour in the pursuit of that great object' David Hume, The History of England, 1807.
I have always admired Mr. Fry's ability to speak extemporaneously and mindfully on a wide range of subjects without stuttering. I cannot do it. Few can do it. He cannot hope to do it forever. We should be training a replacement. Is anybody working on this?
Way to go Stephen Fry. Honest and bold. Saying what I have always felt. Especially after losing a daughter at 29 weeks gestation. Woody Allen says God is an under achiever, I think Mr.Fry is nearer the mark.
You can't argue with logic but whether one believes in a higher power or not, we should all respect their thoughts and their desire to live their own truths.
I have always liked Stephen Fry very much, He is funny, intelligent, well spoken and kind and he suffers very human despair. I don't always agree with him, but I find his beliefs to be compelling.
Best wishes for Monty. The only time I think about religion is when I lose a beloved pet, then I hope that I might reunite with them one day. Kind of like wishing on a star, isn't it?
Hi Cro, I went to St Martins church school off Lewes road in Brighton, you probably know it Cro. Religion was drummed into us. When I was in my early 20's my Father died the most horrible death and it killed religion dead for me. I love nature with a passion and apart from my family that is what I worship. Well done Srephen for saying so succinctly exactly what I feel. Briony x
Sadly, and I mean that, Mr Stephen Fry, despite being articulate and clever, is on his way to hell. Like everyone, he is a sinner. But because he is also so puffed up with self-righteous pride, he wont or can't accept the FREE gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Too bad that he is one of the majority on the broad way.
Wonderful post. I always have felt that religion is just another ploy for people to gain power over other people. Raised a Catholic I do find sitting alone, not at mass, in a church, give me a place to sit and think and be quiet. But I can do that outside by a tree in nature. I also am starting to believe there is no karma. Because if there were I could walk and be free of my everyday pain and my x who is one of the most horrible sociopaths ever would be where I am today.
I am not a troll. My name is Sara I'm a German jew, not religious but respecting people . I was just astonished that you ignored the video . Mr. Fry thinks what he wants no problem but why trying to make other people think the same. Sara

How is Monty doing?
Well said Stephen
I'm with the majority.
How strange Yael makes no comment about your video ! What do you think ?

PS. Hurlez avec les loups ne représente pas encore une opinion.

Yael has previously said that she's not a religious person, but you'd have to ask HER why.
My opinion about religion is well known.

Why put the sewage system next to the playground? God has much to answer for and this is just one.

Thank you for taking the time to answer Cro. I hope he will be ok.
Well put Andi, and so say I !
Fingers crossed for Monty.
You can't argue with what he's saying!
I quite expect that the people who think of him as a 'pompous ass' are those who wish they had equal intelligence. He's an easy target.
Brilliant. Thank you.

Ooh Cro, a playground jab worthy of a dead leg or chinese burn.
Why would Marcia NOT want to watch it? Logic and truth appeal to most people.

He's obviously spent a lot of time thinking about that very issue.
I am sorry Cro of the return of the trolls.

Well said, Andi.
Gary, they work just as well now as they did in the Lower IVth.
We're often saying "There'll never be another...", but people do come along.
Some of my most reflective times have been spent in medieval religious buildings. One doesn't have to believe in fairies to benefit from their calm.
You are Sara like I am Aron.
Oh so hi Yael Aron you got a double sex ? You believe what you want it's your business not mine. I know who I am .
Shalom my dear
