Cherry Ripe.

What a year it's been for cherries! I don't think I've ever known another like it; almost every cherry tree in the neighbourhood has been over-loaded, and generous invitations to 'take as many as you like' have been non-stop.

I posted a picture of my first bowl of cherries on May 9th, and we've hardly been without a bowl-full on the kitchen table since that day.  By the time they finish we will have had a whole month of cherries.

Above is the tree that I planted to welcome my grandson George into the world. It's still a young tree, but it's groaning with fruit which are just ripening. I chose a yellow cherry because there are plenty of red varieties all around us, and I'm also told that birds tend not to eat them, thinking that they're not yet ripe! Now that we have some extra land I shall be putting in a few more classic deep red varieties as well.

  1. Hello:
What a splendid crop of cherries on George's tree. Possibly, when there are so many, the birds are outfaced!

  3. I've just come in from talking to my neighbour. He says that even the Starlings aren't reducing the crop this year.... simply too many.

  4. Cherries - lovely. Thanks, though, for putting that bloody awful ditty into my head. I'm now going to spend the rest of the day trying to get rid of it.

  5. I've eaten so many cherries this year I just can't face any more. I've ended up making cherry chutney just so they don't get thrown away.

  9. They are just appearing in our supermarkets here...I buy a handful each week just for "walk pasts". There is a tree at the end of the street (it's not ready quite yet" that drops cherries all over the sidewalk.

  12. Cherries are much too expensive at the stores here, but alas, they're also much too luscious to resist. (So don't ye be complaining about having too many of 'em!)

  13. Wow those look amazing - what a fantastic crop. I've heard tell that over here in the UK that this will be a good year for soft fruit. How lovely to have a neverending bowlful of those lovelies on the table.
