Yesterday saw the first of the BIG local boot sales, in the small nearby village of Cuzorn; the home of my tile maker.
I bought four old soup bowls, with four matching dinner plates, ten small teaspoons, six desert spoons, and a small glass that would hold about half a sip of Eau de Vie.
The plates/bowls were made in Rouen, by someone with illegible writing. It could be NBL, or JVBL, or even ABL. I can't find anything about them.
The little glass is of the type that one reserves for Uncle Dyspepsia, when he comes for his tipple on Boxing day. It looks as if you have filled it to the brim, but in fact it's mostly glass. 50 centimes. I seem to remember that Mr Stephenson once called them 'Toastmaster glasses'.
We will certainly use the plates and soup bowls; not quite so sure about the spoons as (by the colour) they seem to have a high lead content. I'll clean them, and see.
A good wash, and the plates were already in use by lunchtime!

They were all hand washed. I expect they'll now be put away, and brought out again in Summer. I probably should have bought more, but there were only the 4 soup bowls, so I made up a 'set'. There were another 10 or more plates.
The plates and bowls are very pretty. Lunch looks good too.

We (I) were very pleased with our purchases. The sale was so big, that we only managed to visit half of it.

They have a very Summery feel to them; and very French too, of course.

I have now found the maker of the plates. They are 19th C, and made by Jules Vieillard of Bordeaux. 'Rouen' is the name of the pattern.
And all blue and white goes together.
Food served on a fine plate always tastes better. Your lunch looks very nice.

Very pretty plates, I like a bit of colour and texture on the table. Is that a remoulade in the middle of your salad?
It is, but not home-made. I tend to use plain white plates etc, but these are fun.
I love blue 'n white or white 'n blue our kitchen is coloured with it and those plates would look great on a dresser or shelves. Display purposes are one thing but it's nice to use them.
You prompt me to look for more colourful plates. I am another who goes for very plain to eat off but these look fun.
I have some glasses like yours. I think they hold a 1/16th. A standard measure of wine here is normally an achterl - that is 1/8th, but you can always be served a 1/4 if you request it. The next measure is a bottle ;-))
We were just saying how nice they'd look on an old dresser. These WILL be used.
They just looked up at me, and said 'Buy me'. I had no option.
I have bigger similar glasses that I think were made for Absinthe.
In England that glass would be called a 'penny lick' and would have been used to serve small amounts of ice cream by a street vendor. I think that is what it is.
I gave away most of my colorful dishes and only use white now. However, when I see lovely dishes like these, I wish that I had saved my some of my blue and white ones.
I did wonder, when I first saw it, if it wasn't an eye washing glass.
These are such classic French plates, and 'original' too. Not modern copies. I think we gave away all our other blue and white plates too.

Salads are daily fare at the moment. Very hot here today, as I expect it was with you.
I love those finds. The local library has a semi-annual "Bizarre Bazaar", consisting of white elephants donated by their loving public. I recently bought three linen placemats and coordinating napkins, plus some other chotskie I needed for a gift. Everything is "name your own price", and the placemats were so exquisite I paid $5 for the lot.
I like the idea of 'name your own price'. Some of the items above were so cheap, I almost offered more"
I wish I could find such things at all the boot sales I attend!

Blue and white is my favourite. My kids laugh about it. The plate might not all have the same pattern but the colours are!

I love those plates, and the spoons. In fact I love old china, would happily throw out my trusty Denby ware and use a mish mash of dinnerware - if I had enough cupboard space to put it all!
