Done Fishin'.

These three rounded and flattened stones are old Dubai fisherman's weights.

My friend Terry (St Theresa of the Floral Tribute) lived in Dubai for many years, and gave me these beautiful old stones when she came to live here in France.

Originally they were just plain stone; they had never previously grown lichen on their exterior, coral maybe, but not lichen.

I hadn't really looked closely at them for some while, and was amazed to see how beautiful they had become. If lichen really is proof of pure air, then I think we must be in the top league.

  1. Love that lichen - when our parents visited Mother was very scathing about the lichen on our trees which as you mention is due to the clean air.

  2. I come from a long line of lichenthropes. Once every twenty-eight days my whole family turns into blood-thirsty spores and we all roam around the countryside, looking for victims to cover-up. It's very popular in Eastern Europe apparently. Sometimes I can only manage to turn into fungus though.

    1. Isn't Lichenthrope a small coastal town in Lincolnshire?

  3. Imagine having one of these (non lethal size) hanging over every seating spot in the restaurant, adding to the overall decor but on a quick release controlled from the bar. Any customer getting out of hand, bang, face first in his soup. There is so much I would like to do but could never get away with!

    1. I can see the appeal. How about a swear box that suddenly descends when language gets too fruity.... or won't it be that style of resto?

  4. A friend of a friend does such sculptures. He gave one to my friend (Simon Fletcher), and took hours arranging it above his sitting room fireplace. Julie later dusted the mantle piece, and moved the 'sculpture' whilst doing so. The next time their friend visited he went beserk!

  5. I like them on several levels because we use plain old household bricks on our nets and those stones ...awh. Yum.
But also the lichen. In the southern hemisphere that would be a south side of the mountain thing but I guess that up your way, they would be facing north, yes?

    1. Also, just to note, I reckon we have the same kind of lichen here, but flatter, not quite as flowery. I see it everywhere on the granite.

    2. You're correct, the lichens mostly grow facing north. These orange and grey ones also grow on our walnut trees, giving them a very particular look.
