Thrift.

Our dining table is from Habitat, as were the four uncomfortable chairs that accompanied it.

Over the years the chairs have died, but the table lives on. We like the table very much, it is much wider than the average table (which I particularly like). It will sit six very comfortably, and eight at a stretch.

We'd been looking for replacement chairs for quite some while, then Kimbo found the above.

There are four chairs and two carvers. The design is a little passé, but they're made from good solid, and attractive, wood. They have a nice country feel about them, and go perfectly with the table, and our glasses cabinet.

I suppose the best thing about the chairs is that they cost just £40 for the six. I imagine that new they would cost more than that each.

We all love a bargain, and this was certainly one. If only life was always thus.

  1. Lovely looking chairs. Will Lady M be adding nice comfy gingham cushions?

    1. We do have some uncomfortable cushions on them; I think we need more.

    1. They are. As solid as the day they were made.

  4. Gosh that was a brilliant bargain, I love them. They're a bit like our kitchen chairs only ours are dark wood. Can't beat a secondhand bargain!

    1. I wonder what the seller replaced them with?

  5. They are very similar to our dining chairs. I have always regretted buying one "carver" as you put it because it will not sit under the table because of the arms.

    1. Our carvers don't fit under the table either, so they stay elsewhere until required.

  6. They look exactly the same as our dining chairs. We got ours second hand many years ago for £40 for four which we thought was a bargain. That makes yours an even better bargain.

    1. They've obviously gone down in value. Next year they'll be free.

  7. What an absolute bargain. I have a cousin who makes Windsor chairs as a business. Just up the road from us in Ashbourne. Has done for years. Last time I priced up one of his it was £300 +.Customers from all over the world.

    1. Windsors are England's best chairs. I would love to own some antique ones.

    1. They're not the ideal design, but we're very happy with them.

  11. The chairs look substantial and sturdy. They are built to last which is always good.

    1. Absolutely, they'll be around long after we're gone.

  12. They are identical to our kitchen chairs. We had them for thirty odd years. They went to a resale shop when we broke up housekeeping.

    1. I wonder if they were imported from the US? They have no makers name on them.

  13. Back in the 80s, over the course of two years, we bought a maple dining room table and four chairs and a hutch and buffet. I remember the total was around $1500. A lot of money back then.

Well the family grew and on FB marketplace I found a table for six with windsor chairs and a buffet and hutch for $300. Same wood and same maker (a company back in Quebec). I bought it in a flash.

The seller said "I hope you know what a bargain you're getting" I told her I did because I had an almost identical set from 1983.

We have to remember, it's only worth what someone will pay.

    1. That's right, and if you can find what you want. That's the trickiest bit.

  14. We have discovered, really, that if we can buy furniture second hand, it is best to do it. The modern stuff is just not built to last.

    1. As a student I once did a holiday job with a Removals Co. I remember one job which was taking a huge crate to a house very near where I lived. They had moved from the USA to our town. When we opened the crate all their furniture was in bits; just piles of plywood and chipboard. I've never forgotten that, and always buy solid wood.

  15. Solid wood is hard to find here unless you have plenty of moolah. Most things are veneered chipboard which looks good enough, but you can't sand it back and repolish if you get a scratch or stain.
