Another find.

This poor old painting was left in the garage, and has since almost fallen apart. 20-odd years of damp and neglect have taken its toll.

It is mouldy, dirty, and the stretcher has collapsed. It's quite a big painting, measuring 44 by 58 inches. I notice from the back that it was entitled 'Feet of Clay'; but I'm not sure why. Its reference number suggests it was my third painting of 1990.

All I can remember about it was a certain structural influence by Giotto, although that may be difficult to decipher. It may have been based on troubles in S Africa.

I might cut it away from the stretcher, and roll it up. It will do no harm up in the loft. I don't know what else I could do with it.

  1. I suggest you try removing any mould before rolling it up, that stuff will just keep spreading and the whole painting will be ruined.

    1. It's a mess. I'm not even sure if it's worth keeping. I shall have to have a better look. I took the photo whilst putting the car away, and didn't really inspect too closely.

  2. That's the difference between writers and painters. A writer's best friend is the waste paper basket. Which they use with abandon, without a second thought.

A painter? A painter can't get let go of his babies. Even if they amount to little more than a still birth. Unless, of course, they [the artist] are Monet, indeed Banksy, and many others who had/have no qualms to abort.

There comes a time in life, Cro, when we need to let go. I'd say either hang it on your wall or chuck. Clay feet indeed.

    1. I shall need to look at its condition again before I decide.

  3. The subject matter suggests something bleak - maybe the mould could be part of the art....

    1. A type of 'Dorian Gray' painting. The picture ages, but not the subject matter.

  4. I would find it unsettling having that one on my wall. It is good though.

    1. He's not a nice character, and the bird is very threatening; but I quite like the rich colours.

  6. It's both quirky and eye-catching and if cleaned up and framed I am sure that there are art lovers out there who would want it.

    1. I'll have another look at it when I'm next in the garage. I may think differently.

    1. I can't remember exactly what it was about, but I expect the same problems existed in both S Africa and the USA.

  8. Nothing is as bleak in America as your newly discovered painting. Be brave. Chuck it. It will make you free.

    1. The more I think about it, I think it was a painting about white farmers in S Africa. They must have been in the news at the time.

  9. Clearly you have a fondness for the painting. Possibly hanging it in your office or home gallery room and giving yourself some time to live with it will allow you to make a final decision. It is an intriguing painting.

  10. Consider after cleaning, using the good parts to cover an album, journal, pen holder, waste basket and such.

    1. What a good idea. I shall think about it. I'm sure there's something that needs covering.
