I've always enjoyed stretching canvas; it's a very satisfying procedure.
It was my favourite, and most successful, chat-up line at college "May I help you with that; you look as if you might be having problems". Worked a dream!
I use quite a heavy white Cotton Duck canvas, and once stretched the canvas is given a coat of white emulsion (or two), then later given a thin wash of Burnt Sienna to take away the newness. Painting over a warm, rather messy, background takes away any reluctance one may have about making that very first mark on virgin ground.
So, here it is; another canvas all ready for daubing.

I'm happy it's you doing this. Not having an artistic bone in my body I would stop right there and call it done whilst I was ahead.
Interesting what you have to do with the canvas. I always thought you just started out dabbing on the white fabric.

You'd be surprised by how long they do sometimes stay like the above. I do like to have a stock.
For bigger works one has to make one's own stretchers (the wooden frames) too. This one was just hanging about in the studio.
I loved art at school ...... got O & A level Art ...... wanted to go to Art School but was discouraged by the academic school that I went to ....... hearing about your canvas and what you do with it just shows me that I know bugger all about art 🤣 XXXX
These days one can buy ready stretched canvases of almost any size. Of course the quality is usually poor, but that doesn't matter too much.
Yes, I gather it's a type of ritual - the stretching of canvas. A bit like sharpening pencils which are then so perfect you hesitate to put them to paper. Anyway, the sharp end flies off immediately. Speaking of paper, my beloved notebooks. Is there anything more heavenly, or at least pristine, than an as yet unsoiled notebook? It's what I loved about going back to school in September. The first inkling of the smell of autumn in the morning, and, ah, the promise of all that empty paper. Spick and span. Fast forward three, nay two and a half months, and the magic had gone.

I am still walking sideways up to having a go. Maggie Hambling on Grayson Perry’s programme the other evening said you must draw every day, which echoes exactly what both you and Rachel said to me recently. I am scared, blooming ridiculous by there you are!

I used to feel like that about my annual Christmas present of pale blue Basildon Bond writing paper. I was always in awe of it.
I put this up with you in mind. Try working on a coloured background; I can recommend this burnt sienna colour, it leaves a warm glow from behind.
I am looking forward to seeing what you do with that canvas. Good to learn that "the muse" has returned.
We guess at what the work may be. If it doesn't work out, we may never know.

Paintings that don't please me in some way or other get painted over. Most of my paintings have had previous lives!

Years ago I read what has become one of my favourite quotes. Maggi Hambling said that you must make art your best friend. For me, this has been true.

It's a lovely colour to work on, especially if one is painting landscapes.
For the moment it simply joins other canvases I have in stock.... but who knows, it might be the next to be used.

It's always nice to get stuck into work. I've been so busy recently, that it was good to have time to devote to my painting again.
I think I know what she meant. It certainly should be what you turn to as a best friend. It's not always possible, of course, for a best friend to remain as such.
