Villefranche-du-Périgord, site remarquable du goût
The first of our local Autumn Chestnut Fairs takes place this afternoon (St Caprais), when every possible use for the humble fruit is celebrated.
I've mentioned before that I live in a serious Chestnut Growing Area, the centre of which is the ancient small town of Villefranche du Perigord (founded in 1270); just 7 kms away.
It's where I go on Saturday mornings to the tiny market. It also has some pleasant cafés, shops, bakers, and restaurants.
Here is a short film praising everything that is 'Chestnut'. It also shows a small glimpse of the town itself. The small bakery at 1.00 is where we buy our Saturday bread.
I agree with Yael, you live in a beautiful area Cro!! I love roasted chestnuts with spiced mulled wine. Chestnuts are very versatile. Greetings Maria x
Since the season began I should think we've eaten no more than a dozen each. I always get very excited just before they start to drop, then my interest fades. It's the same every year. However, I have bought two jars of ready peeled and cooked nuts for Christmas.
I don’t know what they said, (I learned French many years ago, but never spoke it in conversation) however it sounded delightful. The food looked delicious.
They are my favourite tree. Every fall since I was 7 or so, I always save a chestnut as a good luck charm. there are fewer trees now so it becomes a bit of a quest.

Optimistic Cro!
The difference between an optimist and a pessimist, is that the optimist enjoys himself whilst waiting for the inevitable! I AM that optimist!
This is a daily, optimistic, 'photos and comments' blog. I make no judgements (only occasionally), just notes. If you wish to comment in any way at all, please feel free. Everything and everyone (except the obdurate and dictatorial) is very welcome.
I was born just south of London, but for the past 50 years I've lived in S W France. I am a painter by profession, and writer by desire. Lady Magnon and I live between an ancient cottage in a tiny village in perfectly tranquil French countryside, and a bijou townhouse in Brighton UK. In France we have plenty of fruit trees, all situated amongst a view that takes the breath away, in the UK we have a handkerchief sized patio. We also have a Border Collie called Billy. I try to treat our planet with respect, and encourage others to do likewise (without preaching).
Contentment is a glass of red, a plate of charcuterie, and a slice of good country bread. Perfect!
Brings back memories.
ReplyDeleteIt's becoming a more active town, bit by bit. I've noticed a much younger population there than before.
DeleteHow lucky you are to live in such a beautiful area.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't show much of the area, but it gives an idea.

DeleteI didn't realise chestnuts were so versatile or they were grown in orchards. The video was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteLoved the look of that salad.
For the last 25 years or so they have been planted in rows in huge plantations; it makes them easier to manage and eventually to harvest.
DeleteWas it a comedy sketch?
ReplyDeleteWell, I found it funny!
DeleteThe man in the white tee-shirt was hilarious.
DeleteThe old gags are the best!
DeleteSo true.

ReplyDeleteThey are just talking about Chestnuts and products of Chestnut. You didn't miss much.
DeleteI'm not sure if I've ever even had a chestnut. Isn't that sad?
ReplyDeleteVery sad Jennifer. You must force yourself!

ReplyDeleteI always catch a falling leaf in autumn for good luck. It's worked so far.
DeleteI didn't know you could make beer from chestnuts.
ReplyDeleteI've just seen the brewer at St Caprais, he sounded American!
