I've often written about the little treats that I missed from my native England (mostly now available here), but have not thought much about what I would miss in return if I was to live back in the UK again.
Large tins of confit, wine at €1.10 per litre, and several items of charcuterie come to mind, but there are other less well known delights that I would also miss terribly.
For example, our Summers would not be complete without the Tunisian Salade Méchouia (piquante) which accompanies our simple lunchtime salads.
This is a mix of grilled hot Peppers, Bell Peppers, and Tomatoes in Olive oil. Sounds basic enough, but it lifts an otherwise dull salad to dizzying heights.
When (if) I was obliged to send a lorry over to France to collect confit, wine, and charcuterie, I would also have to import several dozen jars of Salade Méchouia at the same time.
I would REFUSE TO BE DEPRIVED!

Couldn't you make your own version? I'll bet it would be just as good, or even better!
Confit is not to be lived without.

I'm going to try; I've been looking at recipes.
I think I have 6 large tins in stock. You never know when they will be needed!

This sounds so good. I am sure if you had to you might made something close to it.
I feel that way about what I miss from Japan, that unless you live near a Japanese market (I do not) you just can not find here. Even sometimes not even there. They can only import so much.

Leclerc. I don't know if all branches sell it.
The UK has wonderful Eastern and Asian shops, here we are more focused towards N Africa.

Sounds nice. I miss Russian Salad which used to be made by Heinz and sold as Heinz Vegetable Salad but they don't make it anymore. However I discovered it again at the Polish counter in Asda (huge Polish section in the shop and I randomly buy a few unknown things when I go in there). Couldn't read the writing but the pictures looked right. And so Russian Salad has re-entered my life.
It's not a dressing is it? More of a real thing.

It reminds me of childhood. Mum always bought it. In fact she neved stopped buying it.
What you would miss is quite interesting. I only spent a couple of days in Vienna, but I often think of how to get apple strudel with vanilla sauce (thin custard) to home from Vienna. Mein gott, it was nice.
I rather fancy an Apple Strudel too; maybe I'll have mine without the sauce.
Look in the Greek deli. Greeks love 'russian salad', veges in mayo.
Don't you or the 'good lady' do your own confit? Fyi I buy and do my own.
I have done in the past, but I actually prefer the taste of the tinned Confit. My neighbour used to make the most wonderful Confit (pre tins days) but I never asked her EXACT method. I should have.
