When you live out in the countryside, grass control is a constant battle.
I treat my grassy areas in three distinctly different ways. In front of the house is our lawn (above) which is mowed to 'Putting Green' quality.
Bigger areas such as the orchard, paddock, etc, are mowed less meticulously in 'Fairway' style.
The rest, which is turned into hay twice a year, is left as 'Rough'.
For someone who last played Golf back in the early 1980's, I do cling to certain aspects of the game, even if I no longer swing a club in anger.
Bok prefers the 'Green'.
Currently trying to re-lawn 1/3rd of an acre through assiduous watering. mixed results. About to break out the re-seeding with fertilizer technique. Watering night and day. Any tips?

DeleteI think ours is finely mown weeds, not a lot of grass content.
ReplyDeleteOurs started off as 'field', but over the decades has become quite a reasonable lawn. Where I had the bird feeder, hanging from a tree, is now very lush with wheat grass!
DeleteMy grass on Lewis has suffered badly during the last two winters and I'm very much afraid using your comparisons it would be very far into the rough category without the length ie I would not like to be attempting to hit a ball out of it.

ReplyDeleteA friend tried to give me a Goat once. I'd just said 'Yes' when I found the animal on top of my car. My 'Yes' soon became 'No'.
DeleteOurs is lush weed and poor grass kept just about to 'back garden' height. The 'borders' are also mainly for the dog's benefit.

DeleteThe 'Rough' is my favourite bit; I have nothing to do with it. My neighbour cuts it for hay twice a year.
DeleteI find the English obsession with their lawns, even in France interesting to observe. As I comment now my husband is mowing our 'meadow/orchard' constantly trying to improve its quality and up its greenness. As soon as the heat continues for more than a few days he worries that it will die and never recover. Trouble is because we are not here but for a few months of he year, things get rather out of hand by the time we get back.
ReplyDeleteI can remember when I spent the winters in England, returning to find a 2 foot high mess, and trying to tame it with a small mower. Being here permanently is easier, but it still has its problems; drought being the main one.

DeleteI'm with Bok. In a way it would be nice to have land with have different height grasses, but I don't miss gardening and lawn maintenance.

DeleteAnd someone a bit above us does. It flaps at the balcony corner in strong wind. Recently I've see some high quality Astroturf and it really is very realistic, far from the shiny nylon stuff you used to see. The test is do people get down to feel it to confirm one way or the other. Yes, they do.
DeleteMy Retired Man was obsessive about his lawn, it had to be perfect - until this year. Now we have hired professionals who aren't perfectionists. Somehow, he is accepting "good enough".

DeleteI have a very small patch of lawn for the dogs, birds and some lizards. Easy to mow and water. Plus it looks cool in our very hot summers. Only 110 today !
