Young artists.

Somewhere on a Welsh hillside, circa 1971.

The four adults in the photo were all at college together. Simon Fletcher (see his work here http://www.simonfletcher.org/), his lovely wife Julie, Cro, and Lady Magnon. Also in the photo are our respective first-born sons, and my first dog Hamlet.

Simon recently sent me this previously unseen (by me) photo. I think it must have been taken when we'd just left college.

Great times.

  1. Simon Fletcher is a well known water colour painter. I have friends in Montpellier who own some of his wonderful paintings. A question do you have exhibitions where we can see your works and what is your artist name ?

    1. Simon has work in important collections in many countries; he's a top-notch painter. Personally I used to sell privately; I hated giving 33% to some gallery owner.

    2. Are you still selling privately?I understand that 33% represents quite an amount. Didn't know about that. Is it the same in France ?

    3. I'm slowing down a bit now, but still sell the occasional bit of work.

  2. How cool is this photo. It reminds me of the movie: Up on the roof (or something like that LOL) I'll pop over and check Simon's work now. Thanks for sharing this nostalgic image. Greeting from a cold South Africa, Jo

  3. Gee Cro, you haven't changed a bit. OK, maybe just a little bit.

You and Lady M make a beautiful couple. I agree with Alphie Soup; you haven't changed much.

  6. I have just been to see Simon's website. I am totally in awe seeing his watercolours. If I was better at painting, that is the style I would want to adopt. Beautiful images and colours.( I am sure I have seen the chicken picture before somewhere..... I shall get my paints out and try and do some copying of the chooks ! ) I also love the photo of the younger you, and agree that you haven't changed much..just a bit greyer. ( whiter?)

  9. It is so 1970s. Just like my parents photos were so 1940s. Each era has its look. Great memories held there in that photo.

    1. I don't remember the actual occasion, but I remember well how I felt at that time.

  10. Simon is not a watercolourist of the North Norfolk creeks and boats school of artists.

    1. Not exactly David Cox; more an Emil Nolde.

  11. Emil Nolde's colours are much more powerful and intense. He is one of my favorite painters.

  12. You remind me of David Kossov in that pic.

    2. I've been compared to many things, but never David Kossoff.

    3. A Brummie? Where did that come from?

  16. It's good to have had such happy days, and to still be in touch with folks who shared those times.

I also liked your watercolor doorway. I am always drawn to interesting doors, windows, gates...perhaps because they can all symbolize freedom?

    Best wishes.
