More Boot Sale Stuff.

Yesterday (Sun 18 Aug) we attended one of the largest and best of our local 'Boot Sales', in the nearby village of Cazals (here they might even refer to it as a 'town').

No-one's mentioned candlesticks for a while, so I've remedied that by buying a pair of antique, black and gold, wooden, 33inch, ecclesiastical-looking, sticks. I also bought a piece of heavy gilded ormolu 'swaggery' which will replace the missing piece atop an antique mirror, and of course I can't resist a dark green rustic plate.

I'm happy with my haul; especially the sticks which should be perfect for the barn (when it's finished).

The sale at Cazals is HUGE, and we only managed to see about half of it before it became unpleasantly hot, and we headed for the cool of home.

We were tempted by plenty of other things, but wisdom prevented further rash purchases.

  1. I especially like the dish. We've stopped bringing things home from flea markets and garage sales....It is tempting though.

  2. They say that with age comes wisdom. I try to stay away from sales like that because before I became wise, I bought too many things that were stupid.

The candle sticks are very nice, Cro. Enjoy your purchases.

    1. The picture above shows the sticks still uncleaned (as bought). They've now been given a slight waxing, and look wonderful. I recently re-painted a long console table in the same colours (mat black with gold rings) and the two will look great together.

  3. Those candlesticks look huge! I don't own a gun but if I had those I would feel better about not having a weapon around the place. I would either be pretty bad ass or laughing stock with one of those in each hand. Hmm, maybe it is better you got them.

    They are great looking!

    1. I once did 'furniture removals' as a student holiday job; all candlesticks were known as 'blunt objects'.

    2. *laughing* I've no doubt that's true.

  4. I like the ormolu, but I have to say - as a fetishist - that I am not too sure about the wooden sticks. I bought a pair of brass ones (circa 1800) recently, but thought I would spare John the misery of looking at them.

  5. I love boot sales and flea markets. When I lived in Berlin a visit to the flohmarkt was a weekly ritual.

  6. Am I the only person in the world who has never been to a Boot Sale Cro? The trouble is that there is absolutely nothing I can think of that I want so I can't see the point of going.

  7. We recently went to the 'vide-grenier' in the little village of Themimettes not far from our village. It was absolutely charming and most of the vendors were from the local area -- so there were lots of 'finds' to be found -- and the atmosphere was so friendly and relaxed... though I did have to dissuade my husband from forking out 200 euros on an absolutely ghastley 'old' still life!

    1. Some stall-holders have strange ideas about prices.

  8. We call them flea markets, but I much prefer the term boot sale. Whatever they're called, I love them. You never know what treasure you might come across...thrill of the hunt and all. Lovely haul, Cro.
p.s. David's right, those candlesticks do look huge!

    1. They look even bigger on the table. I've already had an offer for them of twice what I paid..... but they're staying here!

  9. Good haul! We spent the day at a huge flea market/ antique sale yesterday, too. A great way to spend a day.

  10. I have never been to a car boot as I know I would fill the house with 'tat'- I am trying to get rid of stuff rather than the other way round. Like your candlesticks though - good find.
