Here in the UK, the annual dance-fest, known as 'Strictly Come Dancing' is back on our TV screens for yet another weekly display of 'celeb' amateurs pairing with pro's on the dance floor.
As usual there is a wide and varied group of 'celebs' taking part; some much better known than others. This last weekend we were shown who will be dancing with who; all very exciting.
The show is a knock-out competition with one pair being eliminated every week; I'm not quite sure how.
So, what have we got for this year's show? They always try to have a varied selection of people, from old and useless, to young and beautiful. There's usually someone who is disabled, maybe a cross-dresser, a minor actor from a 'TV Soap', a same-sex couple, a nasty person, a nice person, and everything else in between. Whether or not they can dance or not is another question.
I did watch some of this weekend's 'introduction' show, and it was painfully obvious who would be the first to be eliminated (unless reverse psychology is employed).
Someone called Thomas Skinner (above; I have no idea who he is) stood out like a sore thumb, as the person everyone will hate. There didn't seem to be a firm favourite, but no doubt that will appear in time.
I shall watch some of the show, as it will definitely be showing on our TV (Lady M loves it), so towards Christmas I shall be shouting at the TV supporting my favourite. I'll let you know!
I believe the show has been sold to other countries, but I don't know which, or by what name. But if you have it, wherever you are; enjoy!
People here enjoy this show too, I don't, but the people here with their frayed nerves say it's excellent escapism.
ReplyDeleteHappy Rosh Hashanah Yael. It's true, it's pure escapism, and as a knock-out competition, there's a bit of drama involved as well.
DeleteMy husband and daughter used to watch every week, but I've never seen it (apart from Bill Bailey's winning dance years ago).
ReplyDeleteHave you not seen Ann Widdecombe's offering? She was wonderful, you should watch it on YouTube.
DeleteI always enjoy Strictly every year, though I don't think I have ever bothered to vote!. I think you might be correct about the first out...we shall see.
ReplyDeleteI'm putting my 50p on him being first out!
DeleteLess of the old and useless Cro - Andi beat me to pointing out that Bill Bailey won it a few years back. Angela Rippon has strutted her stuff on Strikly, and Debbie McGee was a stand-out.
ReplyDeleteThere have been some very surprising 'celebs'; some were even quite good.
DeleteThey had 2 seasons here of the Greek version. Obviously wasn't very popular. Especially not with me. Dancing is not my thing, whatever the sort, waltz or zorbas dance.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand we are on our 10th? year of survivor. OMG.
I'm waiting for Masterchef but even that is not exactly riveting. Winter television? I hope they something new and different!
I'm quite surprised that it wasn't popular in Greece; it does seem popular in most countries. I'm afraid that most 'reality TV' leaves me cold.
DeleteI won't be watching any of "Strictly Come Dancing" as I am a grumpy old curmudgeon. I pray for the year when the show reaches its natural death. Meantime I shall be banished to this computer as the missus is also a fan of the show. One year she even had tickets to see the final - at Elstree studios.
ReplyDeleteMrs YP deserves a medal. Did she return wanting to start dance classes?
DeleteHim above in the picture was on The Apprentice, he was actually quite a likeable cheeky chappy type. I don't watch Strictly, not my thing, although I do like to dance, I just don't like all that celeb stuff.
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about him other than what I saw on TV last Saturday. He didn't seem very likeable.
DeleteIn spite of it often being the only topic of conversation amongst my friends, after each show, I've never watched "Strickly". I'm not into "celeb's" and "influencers" and tend to avoid them. The most I've seen have been trailers for the programme - enough to know it's not for me.
ReplyDeleteIt's only fun towards the end. I'd recommend the last four or five programmes.
DeleteI’m with those who have no interest in the show. Luckily no one in my house has either.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who detests TV filled with 'celebs', I do find this quite fun.
DeleteHere across the pond it is called "Dancing with the Stars". I used to watch it but over time, the people asked to participate have become more and more unknown, so my interest has waned.
ReplyDeleteI don't know which I prefer; the well-known ones or the unknowns. The unknowns are probably less like 'divas'.
DeleteI've seen the show once or twice and found the dancers either outstanding or painfully lacking in skill.
ReplyDeleteNobody in my family is committed to watching regularly.
The standard of dancing is the fun bit. Some are awful, and others almost pro's. I prefer the bad ones.
DeleteCasting for the shows seems to be intentional. I'd sooner watch Bake Off.
ReplyDeleteI'm rather disillusioned with most 'reality shows'. I quite like the sewing one, but goodness knows why!
