Friday 7 am.

Kimbo always joins me for breakfast early on Friday mornings. It is slowly becoming a 'tradition'.

Usually it's Bacon, Haggis, Sausage of some sort, fried Eggs, and Toast. but occasionally I'm prepared to go a bit wild and present him with something different.

I haven't yet offered him Porridge or Rice Crispies, or even Scrambled Eggs, I remain within my realm of skill; frying, toasting, etc.

I didn't know quite how he would react to a couple of soft boiled Eggs, with Toast and Coopers Oxford Marmalade, but he was reasonably forgiving. I think he would have preferred his Full English, but we both have to watch our waistlines.

I suppose it's laziness, but I usually just fry my eggs. I hadn't had a boiled egg for ages. They could have benefitted from an extra 30 seconds boiling, but we both really enjoyed them.

Nice tradition.

When I first came to England my future mother-in-law, a lovely woman, served me eggs and soldiers in the "breakfast room". Seriously? Soldiers? Never mind. Only the English. Those narrow strips of toasted bread for dipping into the yolk did fulfill their destiny [in my stomach].

Do perfect the art of the scrambled egg though, Cro. Like a lot of arts it's dead simple - if you know how. My mother's? I know one shouldn't speak ill of the dead. I am not - in fact, I am stricken as she died five weeks ago and I'll never hear her voice again - but hers were like saw dust. Yes, so one of my master pieces I often served the Angel for his breakfast: Smoked Salmon with the creamiest scrambled eggs you wish for. Dreamy. Hot tip of the day: Don't take your eyes off them whilst stirring. They are done in zero time. Serve immediately.

It's a strange thing. I love eggs in all their forms except for SCRAMBLED. I don't know what it is about them, but my stomach says "NO".

Oh, and yes, yesterday we had soldiers too!

I like hardboiled egg, sliced and in a sandwich with marmite and mayo on the 2 different slices of bread. Delicious if you like marmite!

Yes. Getting the correct timing for boiled eggs can be tricky. It's a lovely habit you have developed with Kimbo. A nice regular time to catch up. Kippers?

Cro Magnon said...

I love Marmite; I was raised on it. I haven't had an 'Egg Sandwich' since I was about 5. I must remedy that!

Cro Magnon said...

I thought I'd timed it perfectly, but no so. I shall do better next time. Not too sure about Kippers, I love them, but they need to be cooked outdoors (if you get my drift).

Let's hope that the neighbours do not "get your drift".

Chuck them into boiling water and poach them, you can then see when they are as you like them.

If you can stir you can make porridge. My go to breakfast

I like scrambled eggs as they are so quick and easy. Even better with smoked salmon on brown multi-cereal toasted bread. Add a little single cream to the mix before cooking and they are deliciously light.

Cro Magnon said...

I think that's a better idea. I even have some special silicon floating 'poachers' that work very well. I hardly ever use them.

I would have to be held-down to eat Porridge. Muesli I like, but not Porridge.

I think it's the texture that I don't like, otherwise there is no logical reason for my aversion!

Great with anchovies.

Poppypatchwork said...

Just chuck them into salted boiling water.

Cro Magnon said...

Well, I love anchovies!

Could yourself or Kimbo be tempted by poached eggs with chorizo or another type of sausage - flis x

Cro Magnon said...

I think poached eggs will certainly be on the menu quite soon.

Although you may not like the sound of this, boil in the bag kippers from Waitrose are just as good as the real thing. No mess, no cooking smell and taste great.

A great way to spend quality time together.

I don't like scambled either. Your breakfast table looks inviting. Like your bunny egg holder.

Now that's the classics English breakfast. The one we grew up with in the colonies. Boiled eggs, toast, butter and marmalade. Though in the depth of winter we had porridge instead. It stuck to the ribs and kept us going through the morning frost.
It's a wonderful tradition you and Kimbo enjoy!

I think I've had them once, and wasn't too impressed. I prefer the real thing, but they do make the house smell.

It's really nice. He lives just a short way away, and is ALWAYS on time. That helps with the cooking! I love our breakfasts together.

I can't stand Porridge. I like Oats in Muesli, but not 'boiled'. We shall have to enjoy other delights.

I used to go out for breakfast with my Dad on Sundays. I miss him and the routine.

When I turned 60, it was the end of eggs and I do miss them. Anaphylaxis came out of nowhere and ended my life long love of eggs in any form.

Rotating your breakfast menu sounds good to me. When I go out for breakfast, I like eggs benedict.

Cro Magnon said...

What a shame. I'd not heard of an egg allergy before, that must be very limiting. I can imagine your frustration!

The Hollandaise sauce might be a bit beyond my abilities, but I love the idea.
