Shock Horror!

I must admit to being quite shocked, and certainly disappointed; Lady Magnon has been very busy recently jam-making, but she has removed all the pips from her 'Plum Pip Jam'.

Usually the pips are there, and we filter them out as we go. But this year she must have been reading (I imagine) her 'How to be the perfect WI Jam maker' book, and we are to have a very different product.

She's making another batch today, but I didn't dare ask if it will be her traditional recipe (pips in), or her more refined version (pips out). Only time will tell.

We now have about 12 jars; whatever's left of which will return to Brighton to accompany our Winter toast.

I have, of course tasted it. It's very good, as usual.

  1. I think one can cook jam with the 'pips' in a bag for the flavour, but remove them when putting into the jar. Less fun of counting the stones on your plate but maybe protecting your teeth -- that maybe are on another plate.

    1. Lady M would certainly agree about the 'teeth'; that was her main worry.

  2. My mum always left the pips in jam.

  3. The pips are for the pectin content. I love a good plum jam, but like Potty I'd be afraid of breaking my teeth on them, so mine come out.

  4. Did you know that jam counts as liquid on a flight? My new DIL's Mother gave me some of her delicious apricot jam to bring home from Slovenia after the wedding, and I put it in the middle of the carry on bag as I thought it would be safer there...it was discovered and confiscated!! Never thought of it as liquid!

    1. That's a shame. I hope whoever grabbed it, enjoyed it. We travel by car, so no such problem. We take all sorts of stuff back with us; all legal, of course!

  5. Funnily enough, my lovely wife was making jam yesterday - strawberry jam. We will be taking a couple of jars down to London tomorrow when we go to see our son, his girlfriend and our grandson Zachary.

    1. We have very few Strawberries, just enough to eat as we pass the plants. My pukka Strawberry bed is no longer!!

  6. More work for Lady M but far better to take out the pips before I say. We were given a jar of plum jam yesterday. I'm sure there are no pips in Greek jam. Love the stuff, that and apricot jam but I eat only a smidgen of either these dats

    1. I'm not a big jam eater either; just a tiny bit every so often. But her Plum Jam is very good. Not too sweet.

  8. I'd caution on being critical, Lady M might just hand the jam making job to you. Plum jam is an all time favorite.

    1. I'm waiting to do the Bramble Jam. It's looks as if we'll soon be having a bumper crop of Blackberries. We share jam-making duties.

    1. Yes. I have no TV so I haven't seen a single days racing. I've lost interest this year.
