Threatening skies.

Of course I love clear blue skies, and sunshine, but my next favourite sky must be the above.

Sunshine from one quarter, and dark threatening clouds from another. It is the most dramatic of skies, and one never quite knows what's coming next.

In this case, yesterday afternoon, it was a short burst of thunder, then light rain for several hours.

We have to keep reminding ourselves that this type of weather is almost predictable. A wonderful early summer in May; swimming, BBQ's, espadrilles. Then just when you expect the temperature to rise by a few degrees, it all falls apart.

Still, it does make for beautiful skies!

  1. A good rain for the garden by the sound of it.

  2. We coud use that rain here
Fire started friday night and just keeps growing 2500 acres lots of smoke over my side of the mountain. So we now have a fire on the west of me and one to the east. No rain coming.

    1. That must be frightening. You never get rain when you really need it. Stay safe.

  3. That's exactly the sky I love to see. Unfortunately, there's so little of it here.

    1. It was very beautiful, and it made all the other surrounding colours seem so vibrant.

  4. Miss those noisy storms! At least you can be sure that your July and August will be hot and sunny.

    1. I hope so, although it looks like being quite a while before we'll swim again.

    1. It didn't last long, we're back to cloudy and miserable today!

  6. Similar here in England. We had a spectacular warm and sunny April and May and now in "flaming" June it is cold, dull and either windy or raining. That sky is amazing and as you say it makes the other colours seem brighter.

    1. That combination of charcoal sky and sunshine, makes everything come alive.

  7. I also love that dramatic combination. Charcoal grey skies with sharp sunshine. Nice picture by the way.

  8. I enjoy a good thunderstorm, provided I am safely inside of course. As a child I would stand at my bedroom window and watch the lightning flashes, counting until we heard the thunderclap. Thrilling stuff.

    1. I still love a good storm. I sit outdoors under our covered terrace, and enjoy the son et lumiere.

  11. I like the rain maybe twice a week, but storms are much more violent. We are still cleaning up from the one last week.

    1. This was very low key; just a couple of rumbles, and some continued rain. It looked dramatic, but didn't perform.

  12. Love it when the skies are like that, it makes the rest of the colours stand out

  13. Have we ever said 'flaming June' and meant it rather than saying it because the weather is precisely the opposite.

    1. We've just had the same sky, more thunder, and downpour, as the above. When will it end?

  14. Had a dramatic sky like that in the Netherlands - darkest clouds over the sea, then much needed rain. I took a lot of photographs - they invite painting

  15. Take your beautiful shed out of the picture and your photo looks like the highlands of New Guinea or some other exotic, equatorial jungle! A tea plantation owner's backyard, perhaps.

    1. It is very jungly. When I first designed the pool area, I wanted it to be a part of the whole garden; not just some separate place for swimming. I know so many pools that are plonked in fields and without any surrounding foliage, and they look awful.
