Sleeves rolled up.

It was a damp cool afternoon yesterday, and I suddenly heard a strange whirring noise coming from the kitchen.

Lady Magnon was surrounded by bags of baking ingredients, and was busy whizzing something in a bowl. "I'm making Crumpets for Tea" she said.

They were later toasted, smothered in butter, then served with a pleasant cup of Lapsang.

Verdict: 10/10

I wouldn't have a clue about how to make crumpets but they look like the real thing.

I had to borrow the above picture; mine was fuzzy, but the Crumpets looked exactly the same.

Ooh, lovely. Such decadence. Just the thing for a cool, damp afternoon.

Mmmm...crumpets! The UK weather has reverted to crumpet weather - it was ice cream last week!

Look so good. I have to google it to see what it is.

Such a good idea, and two left for this afternoon.

The same here, it's dull today, but then back to warm again.

It's a classic English winter's afternoon snack, eaten with a cup of tea.

Rumour has it around Brighton that you were always partial to a nice piece of crumpet and ultimately that is why you had to flee to France.

I have never eaten crumpets. My mother was always a scone person.

I thought they looked a bit " professional" shall we say, but I believe you that yours were as good! Not had one for ages, must see if OH can get some on his next shopping trip. Nice with lashings of butter and marmite! ( or honey)

I love a crumpet but rarely have them and have never made them. Because I have to put half a pound of butter on them, I avoid them ! I love a potato in its jacket but the same thing applies !!! XXXX

Do you have a little gadget that makes them?
You're right about them being comfort food for cold wet days - they're also great for any other day.

I dare not buy crumpets (have no idea how to make them) - eat one eat all six in the pack.

Rumours of my appetite have been exaggerated (in the wrong direction).

I would have put good money on your being a Crumpet eater... it seems I would have lost.

Just butter here. Actually Lady M's Crumpets did look very much like the above picture, we shall have one more each this afternoon.

Cro Magnon said...

I wish we could buy them in the shops. I believe some shops do sell them in France.

When you live in England, you often forget what wonderful things are on offer. I count Crumpets amongst them.

Cro Magnon said...

We only have unsalted butter, but they really should have salted; and lots of it.

Cro Magnon said...

We have special Crumpet Rings for cooking them; that's all.

Cro Magnon said...

They didn't sound too complicated. I know what you mean about a 6 pack!!

I tried one once and didn't particularly like the oozing butter and the crumpet had been toasted and I didn't like the greasy crispness.

And Stilton, and Melton Mowbray pork pies - oh we do miss mini pork pies with hot water crust.

I think I have seen them in Intermarché. Or maybe it was muffins. I have certainly bought "English muffins" there and they have been perfectly ok.

Cro Magnon said...

We've just had the last two; cor indeed.

MM Pork Pies are one of my real cravings. Every time a visitor arrives from the UK, they are instructed to bring one or two.

Cro Magnon said...

I've bought Muffins at Leclerc; they're very good too.

You're very hard to please.

Love crumpets but have never tried making them.
One of the big hotels here serves a lovely "Tea" and one of the things they often have on the menu is a toasted crumpet served with honey from their own rooftop beehives! Yummy!

Once you've had freshly made crumpets you don't want shop bought ones!

Yummy!

Perhaps it's because they were bought ones having just read through some of the comments.

I hope you leaned way back in your chairs and let unhappy thoughts float away.

After looking at those delicious crumpets I looked up a recipe for gluten free ones and was all set to make some but then thought of all the butter and golden syrup I would be eating so have decided to forego them.

Cro Magnon said...

I don't think they're too difficult to make. The perfect accompaniment to a winter Tea.

Apart from the splattered bits of mix on everything surrounding her mixing bowl.

Cro Magnon said...

They were. The second day's ones even better than fresh.

Cro Magnon said...

We did indeed, although it didn't last long; just as long as the Crumpets.

You certainly need a lot of butter, they don't taste good without. Anyway, butter is good for you!
