The Repair Shop 'sic'.

Whilst taking my rubbish to the bin yesterday, I noticed a filthy wooden object lurking amongst the greenery.

As is my wont, I had a look and found it to be a very solid antique chair.

OK, it has one bit that requires some glue, the wood needs cleaning and polishing, and the seat requires some imagination (above). But that's it.

Whilst looking at it more closely I see that it is made of Oak (unusual for here), it has a bowed front, and some very pleasant simple carving at the top of the back. It's a very nice rustic chair.

I couldn't resist cleaning one little bit, just to see what was underneath all that grime. I reckon it'll come-up a treat!

No doubt it's already been replaced by some plastic tat from Chair-u-Like!

  2. Lucky you to be able to rescue it. Definite No No at our tip.

But we do have a yearly 'hard rubbish' collection service. Leave it all on the nature strip / curb and the council will collect. If it's still there when your allocated week starts that is. Most of it will been picked over and 'the good stuff' disappeared well before that time.

    1. This was simply dumped behind one of the nearby bins; not at our much bigger 'tip'. We aren't allowed to take anything from there.

    3. I was going to use strips of some very heavy duty canvas that I have, and maybe some foam from an old dog mattress. I'm a skinflint! Still not sure about the actual covering.

  4. Actually restoring churches is a good hobby. I went and did an upholstery course for our four Edwardian chairs which was a help and made tapestry covers. A sewing project for Lady M.

    2. Graham, all "brown goods" are worth diddlysquat. Which is very strange... I am sitting at a Nathan dresser and shelves...
£1,924 new... we got two, plus a sideboard to match an inherited one... and a table and six chairs... total £35... plus the petrol used fetching them!
At new for the whole lot...
      £8,500!!!
      Great furniture....

    3. If you have a big old house, or a barn, it's worth buying Georgian furniture, and storing it. It's so cheap at salerooms, and it's becoming rarer, because people are chucking it. It can only go up in value.

    4. That is impressive and wonderful if you have a house which will accommodate them (which you obviously do). New stuff will never be the same.

  7. I feel sad to see people spending hard-earned money on cheap Chair u Like furniture (which won't be cheap). It doesn't last, so they buy all over again, and complain that they don't have any money.

    1. You've got it in one! If only people would understand about quality, and not 'fashion', they would save themselves a fortune, and end-up with valuable antiques (one day).

  9. Yes, a good find and something to do. I concur with Graham and Le Pre. I furnished my house for peanuts courtesy of Gaze's Auction Rooms at Diss following in the footsteps of my mother who only ever bought furniture at auction.

    1. When I bought my first house in Wales, we furnished it completely from salerooms. Often the auctioneer would try to GIVE us stuff that he hadn't sold. Huge wardrobes etc. We kept having to say NO.

  10. Charity shops won't take anything like this now, even in good condition, because they don't have a label to show they are made from non-hazardous fireproof fabrics. So if someone has one and doesn't have the desire or time to restore it, the tip is the easy option.

  14. Do show us the finished object. On Antiques Road Trip yesterday one of the contestants (Charlie Ross) bought a couple of absolutely beautiful French antique chairs for something like fifteen pounds the pair from an antique shop and at thee auction they made precisely that. I must say I had the same thoughts as you on the subject.

    1. I will show pictures of the finished chair, but it might be a while (I have a bad arm). 'Brown furniture' is so cheap these days, it's almost worth buying a big house, just to fill it with bargains.

Antiques seem not to be in fashion and fashion, like everything else, changes monthly now. Younger people don’t want their grandparent’s stuff, no matter their value or charm.
