It was a lovely day on Saturday, so I decided to tackle that old chair I found. I'd previously thought it was made from Oak, but now I think it's Chestnut.
I stripped off all the old seating (and burnt it), glued a couple of bits that needed gluing, then found this number.
173324 is stamped onto the back.... any ideas?
Lady M said it must have been made in a factory, but I'm certain it's an amateur job. I do know that prisoners made chairs up until quite recently, so I'm wondering if that could be the answer.
I would liked to have imagined it was made on the 17th of March 1924.... but the 33 (and not 03) rules that out.
Chestnut sounds better than oak. Chair made by Prisoner Number.....
ReplyDeleteIt could be, it's as good an explanation as any.

DeleteThis is certainly an interesting task, it may be a serial number for a production series.
ReplyDeleteI've now made the whole chair very solid again. It's a fun project that I'm taking my time over. Perhaps I should leave my own mark when it's finished!
Delete17 is the year I'd guess. 3324 would be a reference number (perhaps from factory or prison) I'd assume.
ReplyDeleteWho knows. I was very surprised to see it there.
DeleteCould that single piece of wood have come from something else originally, so that it is both from a factory(in part) and hand-made?
ReplyDeleteEverything is possible. I doubt if I'll ever get to know exactly what it means.
DeleteWill you show us a photo when you have finished restoring it? I would like to see how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteI certainly will. I've just been gluing the last bit. It's already nice and solid again.
DeleteProbably a serial number. Looking forward to seeing the restored chair.
ReplyDeleteIf it was a mass-produced chair, I'd agree with you, but it's very much a 'homemade' country chair.
DeleteI am sure you will do a good job with the chair. It is wonderful to have a project, especially in the winter. I m looking forward to seeing the finished product.
ReplyDeleteI think it could be the manufacturer’s serial number.
I shall certainly make it usable again, and return the wood to its former glory. I'm in no hurry to finish it.
DeleteI am looking forward toseeing a photograph of you sitting in the finished chair.
ReplyDeleteSo am I, but it may be a while.
DeleteA rather interesting conundrum. It would be nice to solve it.
ReplyDeleteSo far, I'm not coming-up with any answers. Looks like it'll remain a mystery. Maybe I'll name it 'The Mystery Chair'.
