Great Expectations.

"Would you like me to bring back anything from Blighty for you?"

I prepared a short list and she placed it in her handbag. I waited patiently for the two weeks that she was away, then when she returned I said nothing.

"I've got those fruit flavoured indigestion tablets you wanted" she said, as she slowly unpacked her suitcase "And the packet of Cavolo Nero seeds".

Still I said nothing, as I crossed my fingers even tighter.

"Oh, and there's this" she said nonchalantly, as she passed me a lumpy blue paper wrapper.

"Ah, thank you darling; that's wonderful".

A pork pie and pickle. Lovely. I guess the French don't do a pork pie like we do.

We have something called 'Paté en croute' but it's nowhere near as good as a pukka pork pie.

Yummy!!!!

That water crust pastry looks perfect. I have several pie shops that I visit. I usually buy half a big pie as you get or seem to get more meat for your money.

Looks good enough to eat :-)

We always have pork pie ( and Branston pickle ) for breakfast on Xmas Day. I believe it is a Leicestershire tradition, which is where I was born and brought up. Coincidentally, I had taken a left over piece out of the freezer yesterday!

That sounds like a very wise tradition. We always have smoked Salmon on toast, but I'd much prefer the pork pie.

I asked the same question of my Adjutant in Belize and a genuine Melton Mowbray Pork Pie was the only thing on his list! Melton Mowbray to Brize Norton, BN to Gander in Canada, Gander to Washington DC, DC to Belize cradling a massive pork pie, the big tin kind with eggs through the middle.

I hope he was promoted!

It was me who asked him the question and a MM pork pie was his request and it was me that did the lugging! I was promoted so I suppose he had convinced the CO not to write anything nasty about me!

Sorry, I wasn't paying attention; I've got my TV man on the roof!

It looks delightful.

Curiously around these parts it is the French.... Quebecois that is that make the pest pork pies. Tourtiere they call them. The clove and allspice is what really makes them tasty.

FWIW, if you google Tourtiere you will come up with many variations on the theme. Generally they include diced potatoes or oats as a bulk builder. The ones with clove, nutmeg, allspice and even a touch of brandy are most representative of the real thing.

He's gone now, and we have our UK TV back. Lady M very happy.

Cro Magnon said...

I've always thought of a Tourtiere as a type of Game Pie, but made with pork. The 'hot water crust pastry' of an English pork pie is very particular, and the adding of jelly to fill up the spaces is a major part of the pie.

I assume the lovely pie was on the short list; if not, an even more lovely token. I assume it's eaten cold, and I believe that would put me off.

Looks much tastier than the contents of 'Going Gently's' Berlingo!!

Cro Magnon said...

It was on the list, but Lady M likes to think she's in charge of my waistline. Yes, it's always eaten cold, usually with pickles and mustard.

Some like Scotch eggs, others like Pork pies.

You're going to need those fruit-flavoured indigestion tablets.

Do you mean to tell me that you have to exist without pork pies (and chutney) over there? How awful. Just unpacking two Melton Mowbray ones to tea.

I must have a word with my supermarket boss. The last time I asked him for Indian pickles; he obliged!

Carol said...

Oh my goodness, that looks delicious! I have never had that - though I have had (and love) scotch eggs!

Ohio has a treat in store! If you like Scotch eggs, you'll probably love these.

Much better than Scotch eggs -- in my humble opinion!

Mike Silvius said...

I am sure it is nowhere near the Melton Mowbray but your post motivated me to make my own variation on the theme.
