Seeing as every peccadillo committed by the Tories was classified as 'Sleaze' by the Socialists, I suppose that 'what goes around comes around', and the honour must be reciprocated.
This time it's the fragrant Liz Kendall; the minister for ROBBING pensioners of their £300 winter fuel allowance.
It seems that Ms Kendall, and her Old Etonian city-banker partner, live in a £4 Million Notting Hill mansion, and, guess what; they have their heating bills paid by US THE TAXPAYERS. What a bloody cheek. Super-Sleaze indeed!
It has been revealed that she claimed £3,810 for her 2023/24 heating bill, with the largest monthly payment being £352. A movement is afoot to make her repay the money; she can certainly afford to!
As her partner, James Ind, is an Old Etonian, one also has to wonder if Ms Kendall has had words with Angela Rayner over calling him "A Misogynistic, racist, homophobic, banana republic, pile of Scum". Oh dear! Red faces!
It has also been revealed that Kendall and Ind scrape by on a combined salary of just £760,000. Great work, if you can get it.
The only other Sleaze to hit The Labour Party last week (that I know of) was that of Louise Haigh. The fragrant Ms Haigh was the UK Transport Secretary until she resigned over a fraud conviction involving an Aviva work mobile Phone that she claimed had been stolen. It hadn't, and she was convicted. Naughty naughty!
Meanwhile in the USA there's been even more sleaze. Biden has pardoned his charming son, Hunter, of gun and tax offenses. This must be one of the worst cases of nepotism in the history of America. It really pays to have a father in high office.
It is awful but unfortunately politics attracts the dregs of society.
ReplyDeleteWait till we find out that Lord Alli purchased the Victoria's Secret underwear for Sir Queer and not his wife.
The moral of the story must be not to throw sh*t at the opposition, because it may well bounce back when in power.
DeletePoliticians on every side, red, blue and all badges in between, are the same the world over. Sticky fingered liars most of them.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that is so, and they should ALL be ashamed of themselves.
DeleteWho needs to watch TV soaps when there's all this going on in politics! My motto of 'trust no-one' is ever more relevant these days....
ReplyDeleteIt's all like a very bad soap opera, but taking place in 'the corridors of power'. It has always been thus!
DeleteAnother balanced post from journalist Cro. Now if you could just start using F instead of C you could have a career with the Daily Mail.
ReplyDeleteDid I get something wrong? Please let me know, and I'll alter it to suit your left-wing sensitivities.
DeleteYou incorrectly categorize me Cro. I am not, as you say, left wing. I look at the policies.
DeleteI disagree with you and think removing an untaxed benefit based solely on age was a GOOD thing as opposed to ROBBERY (by the way use of caps is also encouraged in the Daily Mail)
And, of course, you are back to describing female labour MPs as “fragrant”.
Of course I will never know, nor do I wish to, but if you're a Tory voter I'll eat my hat.
DeleteI have referred to Liz Truss as 'fragrant'. I don't think she was a Labour MP.
All Tory MPs with constituencies outside London who have second homes in the capital that allow easy access to The Palace of Westminster are entitled to claim for their gas and electricity use in that second home. Of course the right wing "Daily Mail" and "Daily Express" neglect to cover that point. "The Daily Mail" is owned by the fragrant Jonathan Harmsworth, 4th Viscount Rothermere. He who pays the piper calls the tune. "The Daily Express" has a similar heritage though today it appears to be in the hands of right wing profiteering hedge funds and investment organisations.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll find that the wealthier MP's, both Labour and Tory, usually decline to take their heating costs. I don't think Kendall was 'hard-up'. I quite expect she'll pay the money back.
DeleteThink you would be surprised how many do claim “utilities”. I looked at the six candidates for Tory leadership, three out of six claimed for utilities.
DeleteOut of interest I had a look at Osborne’s expenses as he is all over the press at the moment for being a filthy rich Tory scum. His constituency was just outside Manchester and he didn’t even claim for a second dwelling. Perhaps expenses were different back then?
And Cro, you might want to brush off that hat as I have voted Conservative several times.
They were talking about Biden and the pardon on Greek tv this morning. That's nothing compared to other Presidents. The pardons he and Trump gave to relatives is incredible but Clinton pardoned family and friends and so did Obama.
ReplyDeleteThis one seems so much worse. He's a drug taking criminal, and goodness knows what else. You're probably right about the others; nothing surprises me.
DeleteI'm afraid that sleaze amongst MPs long predates the current era - a hundred years ago we had Lloyd George selling peerages, a practice resurrected by Tony Blair some quarter century ago.....
ReplyDeleteWhy do people wish to become MP's? They want the power and everything that brings with it.
DeleteThe authority for the President to issue pardons is explicit in the Constitution, it is within the President's prerogative to do as they wish, one of the few unrestricted powers. tRump did it on his way out the door, and will probably issue a slew of pardons of violent criminals he calls political prisoners in the first quarter of 2025.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't make it better, regardless who does it. The law is the law, and simply because one is 'president' shouldn't mean that you can ignore that.
DeleteAgree with you 100% on this on. I don’t care it is in the constitution. It doesn’t belong there in the C21st. Why should someone be pardoned just because they are the president’s son, or the father in law of the president’s daughter?
DeleteExactly!!!
DeleteLet's not forget, DT has pardoned himself of all convictions since being elected president of the US.
ReplyDeleteIt is the year of "pardons."
It's a disgrace. What a joke!
DeleteIs there such a thing as an honest politician? Or, these days, an honest party!
ReplyDeleteEerm..... No!
DeleteHe considered it, but he didn't. https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/14/politics/donald-trump-pardon/index.html
ReplyDeleteNo wonder I'd never heard of it.
