June 1st, and all is (was) well.
The new month is treating me pretty well so far. I found some lovely mushrooms, I found my lost penknife, and I found the Mélange épices poulet that I've been unable to buy for several months.
I lost my gardening Opinel some months ago, and have been searching for it ever since. Frankly I'd given up all hope of finding it. Yesterday morning I was putting something in the back of the Compact Royce; and there is was, under the driver's seat. Lady M had moved the seat forward and it was looking up at me; very pleased to be reunited.
My favourite supermarket (Leclerc) has been in turmoil for the past couple of months. They have been re-organising everything, and it's been a mess. Shelves haven't been stacked correctly, one had to step over builders who have been installing new cooler cabinets (why don't they do that at night?), and the whole place left a lot to be desired. However, just as I was planning a trip to Bergerac (to the 'Festifruits' spice factory) I found the spices that I've been missing. A simple mix of herbs and spices that make even the blandest of Pork chops taste delicious are back on the shelves; I bought two packs which should last me a good while.
All that, along with remembering to say "White Rabbit, White Rabbit" just after midnight, means that I am very happy chappie. We were even swimming again yesterday. At the moment things couldn't be better.
Hope there's plenty of shelf life (best before) on your spices or do you think the 'flavour' doesn't diminish with age?
ReplyDeleteTake care
Cathy
I find that certain spices last very well. I've never taken much notice of 'use by dates'. Live dangerously.

ReplyDeletewhite rabbit, white rabbit said as usual yesterday. The weather has turned - it was not too bad this morning for the usual trip to the market, dog walk and supermarket shop but all turned to custard after that. Wind and rain. Still it is a lovely excuse to stay indoors and read. Plenty of good food - salmon for lunch.
Our return to good weather is only temporary; next week back to rain. At least I should be able to mow everywhere over the weekend.
DeleteI hate it when supermarkets reorganise their shelves, makes a mockery of my carefully planned shopping list.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same. My lists always start at the bottom, where one enters, then weaves its way through the aisles until the checkout. It makes life simpler.

DeleteSorry, wrong aisle.

Even I said white rabbit yesterday, after some years of reading your blog something has learned.
ReplyDeleteWell done Yael, I shall keep my fingers crossed for you that it works!
DeleteSound like your month starts very well Cro! Like Yael, I'm saying white rabbit, white rabbit since I've learnt it from you here, to the point of asking my husband to say it as well.
ReplyDeleteGreetings Maria x
Hopefully you will notice an improvement in your general well-being. If not; I deny everything.
DeleteLost my fishing penknife on Dartmoor last week. Bought a new Swiss Army knife, got home and found it did not have scissors!
ReplyDeleteI cannot tell you how pleased I was to find my Opinel. It's been like an old friend for years.
DeleteSame here for me.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteJust blindly put my hand down to stroke cat who has just come in and find she is soaked. It is pouring with rain. It wasn't when I got up.
ReplyDeleteVery nice here, but rain forecast for ALL next week.
DeleteDon't tempt fate like that so early in the month Cro.
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting great things.
Deletestop looking for something, and it feels lost without you..
ReplyDeleteSupermarkets move thing around so that you notice more....and buy more..so they hope!
In our case the supermarket were doing a complete interior refit, without closing down. Of course, they moved everything around as well.
DeleteKnow how you feel about your Opinel. Something similar happened to me a while ago. My favourite small kitchen knife went awol. After much search I resigned myself to fact that I'd probably chucked it out together with a mountain of peel, onion and garlic skins. And then, what do you know, oh happiness, a few weeks later I came across it in the most unlikely of places. Don't ask. Now when I misplace something I look there first.

When Lady M loses something, I always suggest she looks in the oven, or the fridge, or in the bath. I'm usually right.
DeleteYou say white rabbit for well being for the month, correct? Here, people are known to say it when sitting around a campfire to make the smoke go in a different direction (rather than in their faces). -Jenn
ReplyDeleteWe do that as well.
DeleteI've not heard of that. Yes we say it to ensure good luck for the month ahead. It has to be said twice, and has to be the first thing you say after midnight on the first of every month.
DeleteIt is the small things. I went strawberry picking yesterday at a farm near me. There is nothing like local grown. it made my day.
ReplyDeleteI've just come from my Strawberry wheelbarrows, and had a feast in situ.
DeleteA man and his favourite knife should never be parted. Mine is a german hunting knife with an 8 inch blade. It has opened tins, gutted fish, finely sliced parma ham and helped make an overnight shelter in the forest. I would be lost without it, and it even gets packed on hotel visits. One never knows.
ReplyDeleteI have about 10 Opinels of different usages, but this particular one, with the stripes on the handle, was a real favourite. I'd had it for about 20 years, and felt really lost without it. I had others of course, but it wasn't the same. Strange how one becomes so attached to such things.
DeleteI forgot to say White Rabbit White Rabbit yesterday. I was going to say it because it was my Mums Birthday. We went out for a visit and placed a rock on her marker.
ReplyDeleteI need to look up the reason behind the saying. Happy to know you have found your knife.
cheers, parsnip
I just read the comments and found out the meaning.
DeletePLacing rounded stones on graves seems to go back to very early times. I have seen archaeological excavations where they find them. A nice tradition.
