love & marriage -vicar of dibley

The Vicar of Dibley was a UK comedy classic, with wonderful characters, wonderful scripts, and a feeling of social-realism that village-dwellers everywhere would recognise as perfect.

All the main characters are present for this wonderful wedding, and just in case you don't know, the two 'bridesmaids' are dressed as characters from the children's TV show 'Teletubbies'.

An absolute classic of its time. Even if you don't know the characters, enjoy.

  2. Lovely, dim Alice and equally dim Hugo. A match made in heaven.

  3. Sad to think that Emma Chambers, who played dopey Alice, died at the tender age of 53 from an unforeseen heart attack.

    1. I've known a couple of young women who've died from sudden aneurysms. Totally out of the blue; then BANG! Dreadful.

  4. When I first came to England, in the Eighties, future FOS [father of my son] put me through a crash course of British comedy.

Yes, the above. I remember it well. Plus "Only Fools and Horses", "Butterflies", "Rising Damp", "Yes Minister", "The Good Life", "Hancock's Half Hour".

And, of course, the magnificent Fawlty Towers. Don't mention the war. Sweet Manuel: "Que?"

    Thanks for the chuckle,
    U

    1. Yes, those were classics; all of which I have watched. We came to live in France in 1972, so we didn't see them at the time. It's funny to think back, we didn't have a TV or a phone, it was all very primitive.

    2. Gosh, yes. I remember telegrams ! How quaint.

We now live in a world of overload. Everything is on demand/instant. Takes some discipline or natural inclination to protect oneself from the onslaught.

The Angel (*1991) occasionally remarks how lucky he feels that he was born at a time when his childhood just about caught the tail end of an unencumbered by screens etc was., and that his mother gave him both undivided attention yet space if and when he needed it.

Dare I say it, you and Lady M gave same to your children. I shudder to think what the future holds for next generations.

    3. That was the reason I moved here. I had two children at the time and I wanted them to have the freedom of a bucolic upbringing. They also learned to speak French which was a bonus.

  5. I loved that series, although I hadn't remembered the wedding quite that way. Thanks for the memories.

  6. One of the best, I should buy that one on DVD for those days when I need to escape into unreality

  7. Cro, I loved British sitcoms. Watched Vicor of Dibley as well as many others. My favorite was the Good Life (or Good Neighbors as it was later called). Can still get a few, but hard to find these days.
