Lost and found

It's amazing the things that I worry about. I mean REALLY worry about!

Last September I returned to England with an antique glass Mustard pot. I've had it for years and use it often. It's a lovely thing, with a little glass top (below). I thought it would more useful in Blighty than sitting unused in France.

However, I couldn't find the little old hand-carved bone mustard spoon that goes with it (I presume it's bone and not ivory). I looked everywhere, but no sign. In fact as you might see I had even started to use a small silver spoon instead; not at all the right thing. I had begun to think the bone one was lost, and finding another would be nigh impossible.

Anyway, Lady M has just found it. It had been put away 'safely', but no-one could remember where. It should never have been separated from the antique pot.

I'm not sure if you can tell by the photo, but the missing spoon is about 3 inches long, very fine, and with just a small carved detail on the back, it's beautifully made (the photo doesn't do it justice). It is as all mustard spoons should be; a little classic.

When I return to Blighty this September it will be reunited with its rightful partner, and hopefully never leave its side again.

I cannot tell you how happy I am to have it back. Mislaying it had really preyed on my mind.

  1. I sympathize; and am happy for you, the mustard pot and the spoon.

As to putting something somewhere "safe" - HAHA. You don't say. I put things somewhere so "safe" even I can't find them. On the upside this leads to pleasant surprises. I once found a whole wodge of cash which I had put "safely" behind a row of books and had completely forgotten about.

I shall now go and search for my own mustard pot. Not that I use it to decant mustard into but I like it for being so dainty.

    1. Would you believe that we lost all our house keys. We had the main door key to get in, but I had to cut off all the padlocks that keep inside and outside doors, etc, secure. Now I have to replace them all.

    2. Oh dear. Let's hope those lost house keys won't turn up AFTER you have replaced the padlocks. That would be pouring salt onto the wound.

  2. I am presently wondering where my straw basket is, can’t find it here in Yorkshire don’t think I took it to Italy. Maybe it’s us who are always in the wrong place.

    1. Is that a woven straw 'Cabas' with two leather handles? We have several here. I use mine all the time. I could lend you one!

    2. See my post entitled 'shopping basket'. Just type it into the white strip, top left.

  4. Things like that "worry" me too. I think it's an age thing, I never worried like that in years past. I'm glad your treasured spoon has been found. Regards Sue H

  5. I love it when I recover a treasure like that!! It brings a little bit of happiness. I have my mother's salt pig. It has a special wooden spoon.
I have a wee mustard spoon, antique I would say. It's china with painted flowers. But no mustard pot. I envy your set. May they always stay together

    1. Younger people would think us crazy. To them a mustard pot is the plastic container it comes in.

  7. It looks a beautiful work of art, fine things were made to be used, any hints to where our safe place is please, we have a few things we would like to find.

    1. That's a bit like saying 'always get your retribution in first'. Good common sense!

    1. Don't spoil an illogical story. Of course it's in the last place we thought of looking.

  10. Luckily the mustard pot is complete.
I also like one-of-a-kind, antique items and your little pot is a gem.

    1. The photo doesn't do it justice. It's a lovely little pot, and when coupled with its spoon is perfect.
