Give us this day our daily Salad.

I mentioned some while back that I'd had a long conversation with a lady at my supermarket, all about Anchovies; neither of us could find any, and we spent a while discussing as much.

Well I did eventually find some a week later, and they now feature in most of my lunchtime salads; as they should.

In fact we have now settled down to our standard lunchtime salads; they are a cross between a Greek and a French Summer salad. They contain all the usual suspects. What more could you want?

Living in an area that is heavily influenced by N African cuisine, we do occasionally add just one bit of exoticism; Salade Mechouia (in jar above).

Mechouia is a Tunisian grilled red and green pepper salad in olive oil, which is produced as either very spicy, or mild. The one above is mild. The spicy one is almost TOO spicy. I've never seen it sold in the UK.

Note, there is a lump of Feta in the above salad, under the anchovies. Very international here!

Our antique French plates are more fun than suitable, but at least they get used!

I virtually live on salad during the summer, I love it and it's so good for you with all that fibre etc. Your mechouia sounds nice too, I've never heard of it. Pickled cucumbers, yum!

The Mechouia is very nice, but don't buy the HOT one. It's a killer!

It looks delicious. I love anchovies my husband hates them, he would have some olives instead. Regards Sue H

You asked: "What more could you want?"
ANSWER: Chips and gravy and a steak and kidney pudding with a generous portion of mushy peas.

Are anchovies vegetables?

I had some anchovies on toast this morning for my breakfast. Lovely.

I brought a Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney PUDDING with me to France. I'll have to wait for a rainy evening before I tell Lady M.

A bit like that. A guilty secret. I love them; she doesn't.

YES for your Greek/french/Tunisian salad!!! I get very tired of endless traditional Greek salads. A few anchovies, spicy peppers and an aesthetically pleasing plate would lift our salads to a whole different level. Even a few capers, with their leaves make a difference.
I'm going to look for interesting plates now. We have cupboards full.

The holy grail being the perfect tomato.

As often gets remarked upon, in a previous life I must have been a rabbit. I LOVE salads. I once crunched my way through a seemingly unfeasibly large glass bowl of vegetation. Mind you, as to portion size, that was in America; Florida to be more precise. And I had ordered it as my main.

I take it, since you are in France, you dress your salads. When I first arrived in England (this was in the Eighties) I was baffled by what the English understood to be "salad". Garnish, more like. Where is the dressing, I asked.

I have over 100 plates here. I used to buy them like crazy!!! I really must go through them all some time, and start to clear-out a few.

Yes, just a simple dressing of mustard, vinegar, olive oil, and s & p. I don't like fussy dressing. The Tomatoes are wonderful.

Nicely done and it looks delicious. Do you add wine and French Bread too?
Love the plates.

Very simple, but nice colours.

Never wine at lunchtime, but always bread with paté or cheese.

Mmm..your salad looks delicious! My favorite salad is a good Greek salad. The restaurant here that makes my favorite one had a fire and they're repairing and rebuilding their kitchen. I can't wait until they open back up! The Greek salads I make at home just aren't as good, somehow.

Cro Magnon said...

I know what you mean. I've had them in Greece and they are so much better.
