I know I'm not alone in using quite a lot of white wine in the kitchen.
In the UK I'm obliged to buy a bottle of cheap white (£5), and keep it in the fridge. A bottle will probably last for several weeks, and thankfully doesn't 'go off' (unlike red).
But here in France I buy small 6-packs of white, specifically for cooking. The small plastic bottles contain 250 ml, and are ideal. They take no room in the fridge, and are always on hand. What a very good idea!
So, Mr Sainsbury and Mr Tesco, why not start importing these little 6-packs. Everyone would buy them (as they do here), and everyone would be happy.
I certainly would be. And it would save me having one more big glass bottle in the fridge door.

Hi Cro - you can buy 125ml 175ml and 250 ml bottles in UK supermarkets, albeit not in six packs! James
There is a school of thought that you shouldn't cook with wine you wouldn't be happy to drink yourself and/or serve your guests.
Hot tip of the day: If you cook with white wine keep a bottle of Noilly Prat in the fridge. At 18% Vol it won't go off as white wine does yet every splash does a magnificent job.
Plastic bottles? I abhor plastic. Even at a premium, I do buy mineral water (S. Pellegrino) in six packs of 250 ml a shot.

To clarify ... in six packs [glass] of 250 ml a shot.

What supermarket? I've never seen any at Sainsbury's.
I agree; Noilly Prat is very good. It might be a lot more expensive than my cheepo-white (which doesn't go off).I'm afraid that some plastic is almost unavoidable, as much as I try to avoid it. Luckily Lady M is very conscientious about re-cycling.
Tesco Sainsbury Waitrose Morrisons etc
I am Yorkshire's answer to Keith Floyd but unlike him I do not habitually toss glasses of wine into everything I cook - including baked beans on toast and porridge.
Lidl, Aldi, ASDA, Co-op, Budgens etc.
Try buying a can of ordinary white beans. Add a splash of red, some tomato puree, and a tiny amount of vinegar. The best baked beans ever!
Waitrose have small plastic bottles of 0% white and red wine for cooking.....still have to have the assistant say I am old enough though!
We used to get ours from Morrisons.... and they also used to do red in those little soft drinks blocks that come with a straw.... the wine lacked the straw!
But neither was specifically for cooking, they were just one large glass size for people living alone.
I must have a look. I very rarely visit their wine dep't.
That sounds like a slur on people who live alone. Why would Morrisons think that such people only drink one glass?
I must get out more!
A 6 pack of cooking wine.... What a great idea. French culture is just a little bit different from British. We always have some sort of wine on hand. Drinking or cooking, it's all the same.
We can buy small bottles (or cans) here, but the price is often outrageous.
Those little wine 6-packs are in the US too. I've not tried them.
You are so right, a splash of wine improves flavors when cooking many dishes.
They are so useful. I always have a 6-pack handy. Red wine is a different matter!
I don't know how much these cost, but it's very little.
I use quite a lot of white wine in cooking (not as much as red), so I always have them handy.
Odd, in Somerset all the large supermarkets sell 250ml bottles of red and white wine with quite a decent selection. I use them on the odd occasion that I am not drinking or cooking mid week. Bottles of wine do not go stale in our house.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRO! Same age as Donald Trump. Why don't you spray yourself orange and have your hair dyed golden?
I've seen nothing but 75 cl bottles in my Brighton Sainsbury's. I must have a word with their wine buyer.
Thank you YP. Would I also have to strut around like Mussolini? I shall predict your answer; 'Yes'.
You predicted wrong - it's possibly or as Mussolini used to say: "possibilmente".
Very many people can only drink one glass... my wife for medical reasons... myself because there is something in red [and a few stronger whites] that I am allergic to... and I have no problem if I drink 11 or 12% rosé... or an 11% barley wine... I think it is copper salts... bordeaux mixture... and not everybody wants to get sozzled either!!
A good red would have probably chased that food poisoning away....
