Oh to be in England now that Asparagus is here!

The season is so short that one has to take advantage when one can. Traditionally Asparagus should only be eaten between St George's Day on April 23rd and the Summer Solstice on June 21st.

I'd noticed at Sainsbury's that they had some ENGLISH Organic Asparagus. I always check the 'country of origin' as, in the past, I'd bought some Spanish spears by mistake (in France), and they were tasteless.

Yesterday's Asparagus came from the amusingly named 'Bedlam Farm' in Cambridgeshire, and was totally delicious. I noticed that I'd bought it on its sell-by date, which was why it was reduced to £1.90 for 6 fat spears. It was perfect.

What could be nicer in early May than a simple Asparagus lunchtime salad.

Wonderful. I wonder what the season is here. Probably finished. We usually have local asparagus at easter.

Had my first last week, a big bundle of thin stalks from a boot sale for £1.50 - made me two meals - so delicious.
Something else I miss from the smallholding years -when it was cut and eaten within a few minutes

My local Sainsbury's organic asparagus comes from 'Peru, United Kingdom'. It's a gamble.

More important than the season is the origin. If it comes from Spain, don't buy it.

I remember my father growing it when I was small, but he had so few plants that we weren't allowed any! It was ALL for him. Very wise!

Keep looking. Bedlam Farm is huge, so they should supply all over. Maybe Peruvian is OK, but as you say; it's a gamble.

What could be nicer in early May than a simple Asparagus lunchtime salad? Perhaps an afternoon in a hotel room with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Elizabeth Hurley.

A couple of weeks ago I had a white asparagus dish in Belgium, that was one of the best of my lifetime. Local, in season, very well prepared.

I took that for granted. But the next best thing has to be the Asparagus.

Since the prevalence of Green Asparagus, we no longer eat the White. Maybe I should buy some to remind myself of the difference (if there is any).

We could call room service for it. I like mine with poached salmon.

A genuine pleasure. Take advantage NOW!

You devil!

Locally grown asparagus is always best. When it travels long distances to the store, something is lost.
Your salad looks delicioust and nicely presented.

It was a very simple salad, but totally delicious. What more could one want?

We love asparagus... and I steam it and only add a little browned butter, salt, & pepper. It is so-oo good.

My son has asparagus in his back garden. This year it produced seven stalks. He's bringing it over for Sunday dinner.

The German husband still hankers for weiss spargel. It's rarely seen here.

I usually eat mine with Mayo, but with melted butter is best.

We had a neighbour in France who grew about two acres, and we used to buy the wonky ones from him for almost nothing. He stopped growing it; too much hard work!
