My Egg Cup.


Having spoken on Monday about White Eggs, I thought I would show you my lovely 'antique' Egg Cup.

A hard, or soft, boiled egg is a pretty uninteresting thing, but when served in this egg cup, on a small Cornish-ware plate, it takes on a whole new personality.

I was given this one by my very dear friend, Sami, and I've made a point of trying to find more similar ones; unfortunately to no avail. 


Every time I visit a Boot Sale, or an Antique Centre, the first thing on my mind is to find nice old Egg Cups. Where are they all???

p.s. I've now just looked on Etsy, and have found a set of four replicas, exactly the same as my one above, for £83.92. It seems that they come from Portugal. Over £20 each, that's far too expensive for me!

We have a marmite egg up, amongst others, and a marmite mug. My favourites.
The egg is always tastier in an egg up that brings pkeasure

I had a Chicken egg cup as a child; I wish I still had it.

I was once given a wooden egg cup. Beautifully turned but not very practical when it came to cleaning off yolk dribbles.

I have a stack of 6 Olive wood egg cups that we bought as a souvenir of Majorca back in the 60's. I never use them.

Here's a culinary tip that I offer freely. Try buttered toast with your boiled egg. Cut the toast into strips that can then be dipped into the egg yolk. Technically, these are known as "soldiers". I must say that your antique eggcup is most handsome.

We had many such ornate egg cups when young but I have no idea where they all went.

The only things I usually put in my boiled eggs are salt and freshly ground pepper, but I'll bare in mind your 'Solder' .

It's a shame isn't it. We suddenly remember all those lovely things we had as children, and no idea what happened to them.

That's very cute and must make the egg taste so much better. I can vaguely remember having something similar as a child, but no doubt it's long gone!

The one I had as a child wasn't quite as nice as the one above, but I still miss it.

Well, I was a bit startled when I saw your photo as I have an egg cup exactly like yours. Can't remember where I got it; I think my mother might have given it to me as I've had it for many years. Like YP, my Brit mother always made me buttered toast soldiers to go along with a boiled egg. Haven't had one in quite a while. Guess I should pull the little chick cup out of the cupboard.

I imagine there must have been loads of them originally, but like so many things; they get broken or thrown away. I've never been a 'soldiers' person, I just have a whole slice of buttered toast.

Love the egg cup! It's a shame you can't get just one. No real need for 4 unless you just like collecting them. I've always thought the cup, plate, spoon, one uses sometimes elevates the dining (even if it's just to myself).

Absolutely. I have a set of Dinner Plates that I had made for me in Provence, and they make such a difference to a meal. They are like an extension of the meal itself.
