I bought a Fray Bentos 'Steak and Kidney Pudding' (not Pie) last September. It had stayed in the kitchen cupboard ever since; until yesterday.
Lady M said she didn't want to eat it, so I knew I had to wait until she was away.
Their Steak & Kidney Pies (not puddings) were a student standby when I was still at college, and I loved them. I don't think they made Puddings in those days.
The Puddings are designed for Microwaves. You remove the top, turn it upside-down, and zap for 4 mins. And voila your Pudding is done.
They are a little stodgy, but the stodge is delicious. There's plenty of Kidney in there too.
Verdict. 9/10. A really good store-cupboard essential.
Looks and sounds delicious. If that is a dinner plate it is a good size serving.
ReplyDeleteYes, it really was for two, but I made a Pig of myself.
DeleteI'd love to try one. I presume the outside is made with suet. Delicious. With a bit of lettuce so you can say you had a balanced meal. Of course with a glass of something. Wine or zero coke?
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a Suet Pud'; delicious. The glass of red is essential. I'm pleased you noticed the two lettuce leaves.
DeleteI have not had a suet pudding for years. My husband said that they were referred to as 'babies heads' while he was serving in the navy.
ReplyDeleteAt school we had something called 'Dead baby's arm', which was a Suet Roly Poly; hated by all.
DeleteI used to enjoy them but all I can recall is the tin and that I liked them but haven't had one for half a century at least.
ReplyDeleteThey're not something that comes readily to mind when shopping. However I shall buy a replacement, for when I next have the urge.
DeleteOddly I added one to my list this morning.
DeleteGoodness, I had no idea that Fray Bentos puds were still around.
ReplyDeleteMy memory of them goes way back to when first married and we were invited to a meal with new neighbours. The main dish was FB's pudding, something neither of us had knowlingly eaten before - both our mothers being "from scratch" cooks. The thing that I'll never forget was that this couple had a whole cupboard full of these puddings! Apparently he worked for a grocer and was able to buy from the the cash and carry in bulk - 36 at a time!
What a strange story. I don't think I'd ever give one to a guest. Did you like it?
DeleteNo, we didn't, and just pushed it round our plates after the first mouthful or two!
DeleteI used to love those but not sure I could manage the stodge any more.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit filling, but once in a while; very pleasant.
DeleteOh yuk! These and the pies have always reminded me of a plate of dog food. Having said that, I quite liked the pies with their wierd semi-soggy pastry- the gravy tasted lovely but there was hardly any meat to be seen....
ReplyDeleteI have several Pies waiting for me in France. I bought them online but ordered three lots by mistake. I ended-up with 9 Pies.
DeleteWho has been a naughty boy? I notice that in a nod to Lady Magnon, you put a few lettuce leaves next to the meat pudding.
ReplyDeleteI did eat them too!
DeleteNot for me - kidney is on the very short list of foods I do not like.
ReplyDeleteI can understand that. We have a French friend who is the same. Many years ago Lady M made a very special Steak and Kidney Pie for him. He ate it, but reluctantly.
DeleteThe things we can eat when we are alone.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to buy some Lamb's Liver, but there wasn't any. Maybe I'll find some on Saturday!
DeleteI've never had a pie that comes out of a tin. I hope you do not eat these very often. They can't be that good for you. Why not go to the pub?
ReplyDeleteI probably eat one every two years! If I'm lucky! It's not actually a tin; I imagine it must be plastic, as it goes in the Microwave. But maybe that's worse.
DeleteHollands do a very good (but)frozen steak and kidney pudding, only drawback is it’s in packs of four but very very tasty and excellent suet pastry ..
